“Where?” Lucas asked in a serious tone. He was always serious. Drew didn’t think he’d ever seen the man smile.

“The police station off of Cecile avenue.”

There was a series of clicking sounds on the keyboard. “I’m on it.” Drew breathed in a sigh of relief. One thing he hated more than insurgents was social media. It was hard to live your life in shadows when everyone was filming their lives and feeling the need to post it on the internet. “You’ll have to explain to me what you were doing over there.

Drew felt Shay come up behind him. His body tightening in response. “Later.” He hung up without another word knowing Lucas would take care of any pictures or videos that made it onto the internet.

“What was that about?” She asked him.

He couldn’t tell her without revealing his job so he chose to ignore her question. “Come on.” He left her, giving her the choice to follow. Shay was a smart girl. He knew she’d make the right decision.

Chapter 11

Shay wanted to tell Drew to go pound sand at his nonanswers but she wasn’t exactly forthcoming with them either. She still wasn’t sure she could trust him, but he’d made a valid point. He’d saved her twice and taken care of her.

He never said he taking her to someone but he wasn’t sharing what he planned to do with her. She’d tried going to the police but they’d turned her over to some. Her father probably thought she was still held up somewhere. He had no idea she was free. Thanks to Drew.

So what were her options?

The police were out. She didn’t have friends to hide her. She could go to her father but his biggest worry would be a scandal and would ship her off without hearing her side of the story.

The men that took her knew her schedule. They’d know she’d go straight her father. They were probably already waiting for her.

Which meant she could risk it and run to her father for help or trust Drew.

Decisions decisions.

Drew didn’t look surprised when she followed into his office a moment later. He knew he was her only option to stay alive. “This doesn’t mean I trust you.” She felt the need to tell him.

She didn’t know why she was being so vocal. Normally she was quiet and complacent. With Drew that simpering girl she’d perfected over the years disappeared. He challenged her.She liked it. Not having to hide her anger at the injustice of her situation. She didn’t fear he would retaliate and hurt her.

Her father would never tolerate her speaking back to him. He wouldn’t strike her physically. Him and his stupid scandals. Those meant more to him than her. She was just another pawn for him to use as he saw fit.

But he would punish her in other ways.

She’d learned to keep her head down and her mouth shut.

The club owner, Ronnie was the same way. Obey and you shall live personality.

With Drew, she didn’t hold back. She left her emotions out and he didn’t say a word.

He didn’t even blink. “Fair enough,”

“That’s it?” She didn’t know what she expected. An argument or something.

“Trust has to be earned not given, Shay. You trust me enough not to turn you over to your kidnappers. It’s a start.” For now was left unspoken.

She didn’t know what to say to that. “Where do you keep your first aid?”

“This way.”

Shay followed, her eyes drinking in the space around her. It was sparse. The only furniture was seven desks. One had a couple of computer monitors on it. Several filing cabinets lined the walls. Curiosity made her wonder what was hidden in them.

Shay gulped when her gaze landed back at Drew. The bathroom was just off to the right of the desks. The door was ajar gifting her with a perfect view of his back.

Her heart ached seeing the plethora of scars taking up a majority of his back. No one he hadn’t blinked when she was concerned about his side. All that pain.

She could see the front of him from the mirror he stood in front of. His chest was just as littered with scars as the front. Was there any part of him that hadn’t been hurt?
