“Who?” Mike was at the end of his patience.

“He was threatening my brother – made me put those things in Mrs. Carol’s drinks and food. I didn’t want to hurt her and now Miss Destiny.” Milly glanced back toward the building.

Now he knew Destiny was inside. Mike shook Milly again to get her attention back on him. He bent down so they were face to face. “Milly this is very important. Is he still in there with her?”

She licked her lips nervously. “He’ll kill me if he finds out I told you anything. He threatened to have my brother. He’s all I have left.”

“Just tell me yes or no. Is he in there?”

“They both are. I don’t know what they are going to do to her. They took her to Mrs. Carol’s room and I left.”

There were two of them. Fuck. There were two of them and Destiny was alone with them. He looked up at the condo like it was a towering, impenetrable castle. He might very well be too late now. How was he going to get to her in time?

“Sam, watch her. The rest of us are going up.” Ben took over command of the situation, guiding Milly away from Mike’s grip and into Sam’s care.

“I have to leave. I can’t go to jail.”

“Milly, you just admitted to poisoning your employer and left Destiny to be murdered. You’re not going anywhere.” Sam guided her away toward Aaron’s car.

“Mike,” Ben clapped him on the back snapping him out of his thoughts. “We need to know the layout of the condo.”

Mike shook himself out of his thoughts. Destiny. He had to get to Destiny. Time was of the essence. Milly just left, which meant Destiny could still be alive, but they had to act quick. “Second floor, third door on the left. There’s a foyer as soon as you walk in. Living room is ahead as well as the kitchen and dining room, hallway to the bedroom to the right. Dining room off the living room. The bedroom faces the south, so the other side of the building. There’s a tree right across from it. A few feet from the window. If they have her in the bedroom maybe we can use a distraction at the from door to draw their attention and I can sneak in the bedroom to get her.”

“Aaron and I will take the front door. Liam cover the back with him. Carter and Heath, cover the front. We need to surround this place. Sam be on standby to call the police if I call you. Mike, do not move until you see the room is clear. Remember we have to work together. No one be a hero.” With the plan made, they separated.

Chapter 31

Mike had no intention of playing hero, but if Destiny was in danger he wasn’t going to wait around for Ben to get to her.

“Mike, remember the plan.” Liam felt the need to remind him.

“Wait for the room to be clear before moving in. I got it,” he recited.

“Why do I have a feeling you’re not going to.”

Mike stopped and looked at Liam. “What if it was Cora in there?”

“It was Cora in there, man. Remember? That asshole Alejandro beat her something fierce and sent me the video. The whole flight to Panama, I feared we wouldn’t get there in time. I get it, but by being reckless, you risk the rest of the team.”

Once again, Mike was shown what an ass he was being. All he kept thinking about was getting to Destiny, uncaring if he endangered the others. “I’m sorry, man.”

“We all do this together.”

Mike nodded. He found the tree he’d been talking about and started climbing slowly so he didn’t sway the branches too much. There was thick foliage, so it helped hide him from anyone looking through the window. He stopped level with the bedroom, but he was too far away to see inside clearly.

“You have eyes?” Liam asked a couple branches below him.

“Negative. We’ll just have to hope Ben and Aaron knocking on the door shows people inside.”

As Mike sat on his branch waiting impatiently, a scent caught his attention. Something was burning. Not burnt toast, but a real fire. He peered through the window and saw a cloud of smoke drift past.

“The bedroom has smoke,” he alerted Liam.

“Shit, can you get in without being seen?”

He didn’t think he could get in through the bedroom window without being spotted, but maybe the bathroom window. It was far enough over no one would see him. “I’m going in through the window.” He saw Liam’s gaze go between the window and him, but he didn’t question him. It wasn’t the first time he’d gotten through a small window like that. This might be the smallest yet, but he would try.

Mike swung over to another limb and made his way over to the bathroom window. The scent of smoke was stronger now. He had to get inside and get Destiny out before she suffocated. He pushed on the window but it wouldn’t open. He tried again but it remained closed.
