“Ron you don’t need to do this. My grandmother will pay whatever you want, just let me go.” Destiny tried to remain calm and reasonable. If all he wanted was money, he didn’t need to resort to such tactics. Grandma had put up a little fight about the yacht, but if she knew she or her mom were in danger, she’d pay anything.

Ron just shook his head and started pacing the room. He was acting strange. In the past he looked so calm and sophisticated. Now he looked almost drugged out and spiraling out of control.

He swiped his hand across Carol’s dresser knocking over several trinkets and shattering a few figurines. Her grandma wouldn’t be happy about that.

“No, I need you two out of the way. Then Patty will get the whole inheritance. My debts will be gone and I’ll be rich.”

He had mentioned debts before. “What debts?”

“I have expensive needs. Drugs don’t come cheap and all my debts have been called in. If I don’t get my dealer his money immediately, he’d going to kill me.”

“That would be a shame,” Destiny muttered. She wasn’t prone to violence, but this man had tried having her killed more than once. She wasn’t feeling sympathetic toward his plight.

Ron turned his murderous glare on her. “It won’t come to that. You’ll be dead. I’ll pay them off and I won’t have to worry about money again. I can afford all the drugs I want.”

There was a lot wrong with his plan. The main one being her mom.

“Mom would never go for it. She may be flaky, but she’ll never give you everything. Sorry to say it, she’ll probably move on to the next man who catches her fancy within a few months and you’ll be left with nothing.” She wasn’t trying to provoke him, rather, be honest. Mom didn’t stick with a man more than a few months at a time. She was surprised Ron lasted as long as he did.

Ron stalked in front of her, gripping her jaw in his hand. She winced at the force he used. It would leave bruises for sure. “Not if I have anything to say about it.”

A shudder of fear stole up her spine. Destiny feared for the first time she wasn’t going to talk her way out of this. Ron was unhinged and no one knew where she was. “If you kill me you won’t get a cent.” Destiny looked him square in the eye. She refused to cower. If this was it, she didn’t want her last moments to be begging for her life. Ron already made up his mind.

“With you and Carol out of the way, the banks won’t have a choice but to leave everything to Patty.”

Destiny tried to shake her head but Ron’s grip only tightened. “All deaths must be accidental or everything reverts back to the company. Grandma wrote Mom out long ago. She only gets a small settlement.”

Ron’s smile turned sardonic. He knew that all along. That’s why he used a mugger to attack her with a knife. The car accident. All things the lawyers wouldn’t question. With no other living heirs, the estate would pass to her mother, it was part of the clause in the contract.

Otherwise, her mom would get a settlement every month for the rest of her life. “I know.” He smiled as he put the syringe in the bottle, pulling liquid out until the syringe was full, and came toward her. “Too bad you were asleep during a house fire and no one could save you.”

Fuck.

Ron came at her with the needle pointed at her. She struggled in the muggers arms, but she might as well be batting at a brick wall for all the good it was doing her.

“Shh,” Ron tried soothing her. “This is a blessing for you. You won’t feel a thing.” That fake grin crossed his face as he jabbed the needle in her neck. Destiny hissed in pain then everything went dark.

Chapter 30

“She’s not answering her phone.” Mike was frantic, hanging up his phone when he got Destiny’s voicemail again.

“Dude, calm down. She could still be sleeping or even at work already and can’t check her phone. Be rational,” Liam tried placating.

“Fuck rational. The guy who attacked us escaped before he could go to jail. The same mugger who tried running Destiny over yesterday. He’s going to try again. I can feel it.” He raked his fingers through his hair, feeling helpless. Destiny was out there somewhere with a killer after her and he didn’t know where she was.

“I called onto base and spoke to her supervisor, her shift doesn’t start until this afternoon,” Sam informed him. That was one last place to check.

“I checked in at the hospital. She hasn’t been seen there, but her mother is,” Carter piped up.

So she wasn’t at the hospital or work. Destiny didn’t go to many places so that only left her place or her grandma’s. Not to mention the possibility of something happening on the way to work. A car accident. A flat tire leaving her vulnerable.

“I’m going to check her house. If she’s not there I’ll go to Carol’s.”

“We’ll go,” Ben announced, standing up.

“You guys don’t need to go. I handled the mugger alone last time. I can do it again.”

“Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. We’re a team. Through thick or thin, we stick together. You’ve always had our back when we had troubles with our ladies, now let us help you.” The rest of the guys stood up. Mike knew better than to question them.
