“I might have seen one or two. I’ll show you the scar later.”
She’d seen those scars up close last night but hadn’t wanted to ruin the mood by asking about them. Some looked painful while others more like nicks. “I can’t wait.” She tipped her head back to look up at him. Mike lowered his and she eagerly met him in the middle. The stress of the day instantly melted away. She forgot about his friends and the breach. Nothing existed but them.
Someone cleared their throat.
They didn’t jump apart like guilty children. Just turned their heads at the same time to see Cora standing in the doorway, looking guilty. “Sorry to interrupt. I just spoke with Colonel Burns and he gave me a gist of what you’re working on. Destiny, I just want to apologize for assuming the worst.”
Destiny nodded, appreciating the apology. “I get why you did. This breach is a new experience for all of us and I’d expect everyone to be cautious. If they did get anything from that building it can’t be good.”
“I promise we’re not usually so on edge like that.”
She knew that from Mike’s stories. Well, Kinsley was in the beginning, but she’d mellowed out.
“If there’s anything I can do to help,” Destiny offered. “I’m not very good with computer security despite Aaron’s accusation, but I can put some feelers out and see if I pick up any chatter.”
Cora’s smile was genuine. “I’d appreciate that.” She allowed a beat of silence before asking, “When are we going to start seeing you at the barbeques?”
“Whenever I get invited, I guess.” Destiny shrugged. She had been dying to go to them since Mike first started telling her about them, but didn’t want to invite herself. Some of them were like a Spanish soap opera, drama and all. Others were more low-key.
“Well since your boyfriend sucks, consider this your invite. The other ladies can’t wait to meet you.”
“Hey, I resent that.” Mike glared down at her. “I don’t suck.”
“Liam filled me in on the 411. You met her two months ago and were keeping her secret and only informed the team today about her. That’s almost as bad as Liam with his sister.”
“That’s not the same and you know it.”
Destiny felt lost. Obviously, there were still some things she didn’t know about the group. That was okay. She’d rather learn firsthand any way.
“We don’t have time to argue. I have to get back to work. It’s really nice to meet you Destiny and again, I’m sorry. We’ll plan a get together this weekend. I’ll have Mike pass along the details.”
“So that’s Cora,” Destiny stated when she was gone.
“Yep.”
Destiny looked up at Mike and grinned. “She’s everything you told me.”
“And you caught her on a good day. Wait until you meet Kinsley.”
Yeah, she wasn’t looking forward to that. Kinsley was loyal and protective to those she considered friends and family. If Abigail told her she was suspected to have something to do with the breach that wouldn’t bode well for her at all.
“I promise she’s not that bad. All the time.”
“I’ll take your word for it.” While Kinsley had mellowed out since moving here, Destiny had still heard more bad stories than good. At least for those she considered criminals. “I need to get back to the office. I have some stuff to finish up before I call it a day.” She’d rather play hooky and spend the rest of the day with Mike, but they had all night for that.
“I’ll walk you back.”
“Thanks.”
“Do you have any plans tonight?” He asked, taking her hand as they walked side by side.
“No, you?” She didn’t want to assume they were getting together again so soon. Not that she wouldn’t love to. With the stress on base her time with him might be short for a while.
“Maybe dinner with you?” He leaned down to whisper in her ear. “And afterward maybe you?”
Oh. Her body shuddered. She was still a little sore after the long night of lovemaking, but she wasn’t going to complain one bit. “Sounds good to me.”
“Perfect, meet at my place? I should be home around five. Does that give you enough time?”
