Mike pushed past Destiny as if shielding her from the conversation. “Lives are being threatened and you’re accusing the wrong person. We don’t have time for this horseshit.”
The way they all spoke to each other sounded familial. And that’s when it hit her. Abigail, Cora, and Aaron. A serial killer. She knew these people. “Abigail Sharpe ex-FBI agent. Cora St. James, engaged to Liam.” Destiny looked at each person as she said their name then settled on the man in the middle still staring at his computer. That only left one option. “Aaron Bradford, world-renowned computer expert.” These were Mike’s friends. She’d seen them around base and yet had no idea she knew who these people were. Now she was finally meeting some of them, though she wished under better circumstances.
Abigail stared at her in shock, eyes widening. “You know us.”
“World-renowned?” Aaron stopped typing to look up with a shit-eating grin on his face.
“Seriously?” Abigail turned to him. “You’ve barely said two words this whole time and that’s what you fixate on?”
Aaron didn’t cower under her glare. He was still grinning. “I’m world-renowned. Wouldn’t your ears perk up at that?”
Abigail’s eyes narrowed into tiny slits and her arms crossed over her chest.
“What?” Aaron blinked innocently. “If you had been world-renowned, I bet your reaction would be different.”
“How do you know us, Ms. Sheppard?” Cora spoke up to be heard over the arguing couple.
“Mike. He’s told me all about you guys. He and I are dating.” Could she say they were dating yet? It was one date and men hated labels. “We’ve known each other a few months.” She was babbling now and couldn’t stop. There was an awkward silence and she always felt the need to fill in awkward silences.
Mike thankfully took pity on her and pulled her to his side. “I told Aaron and the team about her when Liam got your list.”
List. What list?
“I explained she wasn’t involved, but Ben sent me off with Liam. I’m guess that’s when he had you guys start interrogating.” Mike’s voice turned angry at the end. Destiny had only ever heard him talk like that last night with the mugger.
Cora’s brows pinched together. Her whole face starting to pucker like she swallowed something sour. “Ben knew you wouldn’t let us do our job if you had been hovering over her like a mother hen.”
“I’m not hovering.”
He was, but it was okay. She liked having him close.
Cora cocked an eyebrow looking between the two of them. “Regardless, I have a job to do.”
“So do it.”
“I can’t with you here.”
“It’s not like I don’t know what’s going on.”
That made one of them. “I don’t. Will someone please tell me why I’m here?”
“Cora found something on your computer. Even I can’t crack into it. So you were brought in for questioning.” It was Aaron who answered.
“You couldn’t crack my firewalls?” Destiny felt proud of that fact. She’d always heard stories about Aaron and his uncanny abilities with computers, and she had kept him out.
“You don’t have to look so smug about it,” Aaron grumbled.
“Awe, world-renowned Aaron couldn’t crack her code.” Abigail cooed like she was talking to a child. “Poor baby.”
Then the arguing started again.
“I don’t remember you telling me they argued so much.” Destiny looked up at Mike.
“Only when it comes to computers and security.” He just shrugged.
“Especially when one of them thinks they know better than the other,” Cora chimed in.
“Which can be often.” Mike finished.
