Life was too short for regrets. That’s was what Dr. Grace had meant by letting go. By letting go of what had happened, she could begin to heal. “Thank you.”

“You’rewelcome.” Dr. Grace sat back down. “Now,let’stalk about you and that man out in the waiting room.”

Just like that,Fiona’sjoy deflated. She sat back down. “Like I said before, there’s nothing to talk about. Hedoesn’twant me. Well, that’snot true. He does and hedoesn’t.”

“Hmm.” Dr. Grace’s lips pursed.

“What?”

“Nothing. Just thinking. An occupational hazard,” she said with a smirk.

“About Vince and I? I mean Vincent.” She corrected, she needed to start thinking of him as Vincent again. Vince felt too personal. “Don’t; I’m leaving soon andit’spointless to try and work out our differences.”

“Very well. Is there anything else you’d like to discuss?”

“No.” Fiona would hardly say she was cured, but she was feeling better about what had happened. She would use this new philosophy with the stalker.

“Well, my door is always open if you change your mind.”

Dr. Grace stood and escorted her to the door. Fiona had to jump back when Vincent appeared in front of her.

“Are you okay? I heard screaming but the receptionistwouldn’tlet me in.”

“I’m good.” Fiona chuckled, wishing she could have seen the receptionist hold Vincent back. The woman was barely five foot and looked like she was a hundred pounds soaking wet. Vincentwouldn’thave had trouble moving past her, but hewouldn’thave wanted to injure her.

“Good.” His shoulders dropped, obviously relieved.“Ready to go?”

“Not yet,” Dr. Grace said behind them. “Gloria, if my next appointment comes early, tell them I’ll be a few minutes. Vincent.” She crooked her finger and disappeared back into her office.

Vincent looked at her for guidance but Fionadidn’thave a clue what the doctor wanted from him and shrugged. Maybe to talk about what she shared? No that was against doctor-patient confidentiality.

“I’llwait here for you.” Fiona took a seat in the waiting area, staring at the door, nibbling her thumbnail. What on earth could they be discussing?

Chapter 16

“Take a seat, Vincent,” Dr. Grace said, sailing past him to claim her own seat.

Vincestood there awkwardly a moment before taking his seat. Dr. Grace was everything he had been warned about. Young but authoritative. Dr. Grace commanded your attention with a take-charge attitude, which he could appreciate. She was attractive, he could see what Ortiz saw in her, but hewasn’tinterested in her personally. “Was there something concerning about Fiona you wanted to discuss?” That was the only reason he could think the doc wanted to talk to him privately. Hedidn’tneed to see her for anything, he saw the base doc when he was required to Hewasn’ta sit-on-the-couch-and-talk-about-his-feelings kind of guy.

“I just wanted to talk with you for a few moments.”

“About Fiona?” he asked for clarification.

“About you.”

“Me?” He reared back.“I came here for Fiona; Idon’tneed to see a head doc. No offense.”

“None taken, but nonetheless,I’dstill like to talk with you for a few minutes.”

“Idon’tthink so.” He stood to leave.

“What does she mean to you, Vincent?” Her words stopped him cold. Shecouldn’tpossibly know, could she? Fionawouldn’ttalk to Dr. Grace about them, not that there was a them. She was here about the Congo.

“Call me Vince. She’s a friend.” That didn’t feel right but it wasn’t the doctor’s business.

“Interesting.”Vincecould hear the smile in her tone. Was she mocking him?

Vinceturned around and sure enough, she was smirking. “It’s complicated.”
