“Indeed I have, as well as other things,” he teased. “I love you, Janie.”
“I love you too, Doc.”

Morgan readthe note the boy handed to him and smiled.
“Anything important?” Mead asked.
“Yes. I think one of our problems might just be solved. This is from Doc. It seems our tempestuous Jane is spending the night at his place.”
“Callie Mae won’t like it. She doesn’t see the girls as problems, but as friends she’s responsible for.”
“I know, but it would seem to me there will be a wedding soon. I know he’s crazy about her, or to put it another way, she drives him crazy,” Morgan answered with a laugh. “So that’s three girls settled, if I’m right. Annalise will soon marry Ty Wainwright. You’ll wed Marilee, and if Jane marries Doc, we’ll only have Fancy to see settled.”
“That’s going to be a tough sell. I don’t see her being happy married to a rancher,” Mead pointed out. “She’s far too talented and lovely to thrive in this small town. She has bigger dreams than a husband and children.”
“I have no doubt she’ll reach them. That voice is incredible. In my time, she would already have a record deal.”
“We could send her back,” Mead teased.
Morgan’s mouth dropped open in shock.
“Oh hell no, we’ve screwed up enough lives as it is.”
“Which brings us back to the issue at hand. What are we going to do about Matt?”
“I have no idea. It’s risky to tell him and just as dangerous not too. I don’t think we really have much of a choice. Why don’t you write to Cara and see if they’ve found out anything else regarding Micah’s ancestry?”
“There were gaps, and the information we did find we weren’t able to verify. As far as Laurie, we might be grasping at straws, but it’s the best we have right now. Besides, Matt loves her to distraction, and he deserves to be happy. I will write to Cara, but I feel the sooner we get them married, the better.”
“I agree, but he can’t seem to close the deal. Any ideas on how to get him moving?”
“Oh, for heaven’s sake,” Callie Mae snapped. “Will you two leave that couple alone?”
“Damn, do you do anything other than sneak around and listen to other people’s conversations?” Morgan demanded with his hands on his hips as he glared at his wife.
“You two are as thick as thieves. How am I supposed to find out what’s going on when all you do is whisper back and forth? It’s no wonder Matthew is annoyed. I’m getting damn frustrated myself,” she shot back.
“We have private matters to discuss,” Mead responded. “It’s nothing that concerns either of you.”
“Bullshit!”
“Callie Mae, do you need your mouth soaped?”
“Try it and see what you get. I’m tired, Morgan. I think I’ll go up to bed and I’m taking the girls with me. You close up tonight.”
“I will. Are you feeling all right, darlin’?”
“I’m fine, but for some strange reason, I’m really sleepy. Hey, where’s Jane?” she asked, looking around worriedly.
“She’s spending the night at Doc’s.”
“No, that’s not acceptable. Send someone to get her.”
“Don’t you trust him?”
“Of course, I do. It’s just that they haven’t been getting on very well lately. I don’t know why she would agree to that.”
