“Do you?”
“As in pole dance? Are you still trying to get me to switch careers?”
She chuckles.“No, cowboy, I mean dance-dance.You know, like you rest your hand on my back as you twirl me around the dance floor.Like a samba?Two-step?Stanky leg?”
“Unfortunately, I missed out on all the many dance classes they offered at the Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado. So here I am—still got two left feet and no rhythm.”
“You have rhythm.Rhythm and coordination to spare.I’ve seen it.I’ve benefitted from it.”
“In that department, I have to admit, yes, I’m a stone-cold rhythm machine. But notice how there’s never music playing when we’re bonking each other’s brains out?I can’t do music and bonking at the same time.”
“Thanks for the warning.I guess smooth jams are out of the question, then?”
“No jams, smooth or otherwise.”I turn to her. She’s smiling at me like she’s got plans.“No, Frankie.Don’t make me do it.Have mercy on me.”
She jumps out of bed, gloriously nude, overwhelmingly beautiful, and she’s crooking her finger at me.I must be in some kind of trance because I get up and walk toward her.She opens the cabin door and steps backward into the morning sunlight, still doing the come-hither thing with her finger.
I guess it’s hither time. That’s how it is for me now—she crooks her finger, and I come running. And I don’t feel the least bit ashamed to admit it.
“You’ve never taken a lesson?”she asks.
“Do I look like Evander?”
“I don’t know—I’ve never met Evander. But I know you’ll catch on quick.”She grabs my right hand and places it on her back, just below the shoulder blades. Then she grabs my left hand and bends her elbow. And she looks up at me, pleased with herself.
Instantly, I’m gutted by the beauty of her face. She’s an angel. She’s a miracle. And she’s giving me a naked dancing lesson in the woods.
Of courseI’ve fallen in love with her.
CHAPTER 45
Special K
I’ve known many beautiful women in my life.
Harper, for all her faults, is physically perfect. But nothing has ever prepared me for Frankie’s kind of beauty. Her open, joyous smile, her twinkling eyes, the way her hair falls wherever it wants and she doesn’t care.
I told Harper the absolute truth yesterday—I once thought I loved her, but I was wrong.I worried I wasn’t pleasing her, that I fell short of expectations. So I adapted my behavior to be the man she wanted me to be, instead of being myself.
I tried to twist myself to her specifications. And even then it wasn’t enough.
I don’t worry about any of that shit with Frankie.I am who I am, and I get the feeling that she’s completely authentic with me, too.Real.Even if she’s leaving out a huge chunk of her story.
And now we’re dancing, our feet crunching on the pine needles, our bodies getting closer and closer together until we’re swaying as one person.
I bend down to kiss her when a black blur runs between our legs and we watch Pussy take off into the woods.
“Pussy!”Frankie screams.
“I got her,” I say.“Don’t worry.”
Yeah, I’ll do the worrying for both of us.The last thing I want is poison ivy on my unit.
“Special K?”
I turn around and nearly lose my breath.Frankie is down on the pine needles, holding herself and rocking.“Please get her.I…”
“I’ll be right back, Boots. It’ll be okay.”
