RHODES: I don’t know. Is there?

FINN: Oh, I’m sure there are. But I’d probably just tell them to keep their helmets on and all would be good.

Now I laugh loud enough to draw the attention of my teammates.

And I can’t find a fuck to give.

RHODES: I’ll keep that in mind.

FINN: See that you do.

The conversation lulls and I wonder what to say next—or if there evenisanything to say.

FINN: I’m going to head to bed.

I start typing out a reply, but another text comes through.

FINN: Thanks for letting me come to the game tonight. It was really fun.

I delete, start typing again.

FINN: Safe flight and good luck on the road trip.

Shaking my head, I say the only thing I can.

RHODES: Goodnight, Finn.

She doesn’t reply.

Which is probably for the best.

Finn

“Why don’tyou come to dinner tonight?”

I glance up from the kennel I’m wiping down to see Chrissy standing in the doorway, baby Mia strapped to her chest.

And a look in her eyes that tells me she’s up to something.

Something involving mischief.

“Sorry, what?”

“Dinner,” she repeats. “With me and the girls.” She shrugs delicately. “You’re on your own tonight, right?”

I wipe my hands on a towel. “How do you know that?”

“Rhodes might have mentioned to the guys after practice that he and Chloe are hitting up that characters on ice show that’s in town, so I figured you might want a little girl time.” She smiles. “Rory, me, Attie, Belle, and a few others are getting together tonight for drinks and girl dinners.”

That sounds…

Really fun, actually.

But—

“I wouldn’t want to intrude.”
