Lexi was already in bed when Connor came in and got undressed. “There’s my girl,” he said as he slid under the sheets.

Rolling toward him, Lexi rested her head on his shoulder and her hand on his bare chest. She was set to say something sexy, but yawned instead.

“It’s a shame, really,” Connor said with a sigh.

“What is?”

“That the romance is gone already.” Another loud sigh. “Just the sight of me in bed makes you yawn.” And yet another sigh. “Well, at least we tried, right?”

She knew he was teasing and playfully slapped his chest. “Oh, stop. You know how busy things have been, and there’s no end in sight. Once things calm down and we all settle into a routine, I’ll feel better.”

“I’d love to make you feel better right now,” he said silkily. Slowly, he maneuvered them until she was on her back and he was partially covering her body with his.

Her arms went around him as she forced herself not to yawn again. “I like the sound of that.”

His laugh was low and husky. “I thought you might.” Placing a kiss on the tip of her nose, he said, “Stay right there,” before moving out of her arms.

She whined as he moved away, curious about what he was doing. But he quickly rolled away and opened the bedside table drawer and then carefully moved back.

Holding a bowl of chocolate mousse.

Her eyes went wide. “Oh my goodness! How did you do that?” she asked, sitting up.

“I put it in here while you and Annabeth were reading. I placed the bowl in a chilled bowl to keep it cold.” He shifted slightly and sat up beside her. “Here. Hold this while I fix our pillows.”

“Wait…so we’re going to eat this just like…this? With a spoon and not…?”

He guided her back against the pillows. “There will be no sexy mousse play tonight. I know you’re tired, but I know it’s your favorite. Plus, you weren’t really hungry while we were around the fire, but I thought maybe you wouldn’t mind a little something before bed.”

“I’ve never loved you more,” she said, resting her head on his shoulder. “Now feed me, and I’ll show you how thankful I am when we’re done.”

They were both laughing and giggling as they shared the sweet dessert. And when the last of it was done, they thanked each other just fine even without any leftover sexy mousse.

Epilogue

One month later…

“That can’t be right,” Lexi murmured.

The knock on the bathroom door startled her. “Lex? Ruth just picked up the kids. We need to get going or we’ll be late for the appointment with the architect.”

Swallowing hard, she tried to find her voice. “Um…yeah. Okay. I just need five minutes.”

He agreed, but she could hear the confusion in his voice. And really, she couldn’t focus on that right now because all her attention was on the pregnancy test in her hands.

It was positive.

Her breath was shuddering as she tried to wrap her head around what she was seeing. She’d like to say that it wasn’t possible, but she and Connor had been having a lot of sex and they didn’t always use protection. Not that they were being completely irresponsible, but sometimes it just worked out that way.

They had talked about having more kids, but that was supposed to be after they were married and in their new house. She couldn’t imagine him being disappointed, but this was definitely going to change a lot of their plans.

Two minutes later, he was back at the door.

“Hey, uh…I really don’t want to be a nag, but…are you okay? Should we reschedule?”

Looking at her reflection, she gave herself the shortest pep talk ever.
