“Yes.” Then he held his breath and waited for his friend to give him all the reasons this wasn’t a good idea.

“Does she know?”

“Not yet. I was planning on talking to her over lunch.”

“Are you going to make dinner for the two of you?”

“That was the plan.”

“Will there be enough for three extra people?” Walker asked with a smirk.

“No.”

He got to his feet. “No problem. Slater’s flying out to Montana to see about recruiting a former co-worker and asked if I’d drive him to the airport. I’ll take Harlow with me, and we’ll make it a date night.”

When he turned to walk away, Connor stopped him. “That’s it? You’re not going to tell me this is a bad idea or how I need to leave Lexi alone?”

“The way I see it, the two of you have settled into this little domestic setup because of your kids. She’s happy and has shown no signs that she wants anyone to intervene. You’re both adults, and all I can say is that I hope you take it slow and remember that you will have to work together even if things don’t work out.”

“O-kay…”

“We’ve come too far in all of this, Con, to let old childhood relationships ruin it. The opening of the resort is right around the corner, and I’d hate for anything to put a damper on it.”

“Understood.”

“Great! Then I’ll see you at lunch.”

He nodded and waited until he heard the door close before letting out a long breath. A quick glance at his watch showed he still had a couple of hours before Lexi would come up for lunch, and he wondered if he should try to talk to her before that.

“All she can do is say no,” he muttered, pulling out his phone.

Connor: Hey! I heard Axel & Maisie are thinking of taking the kids out tonight for pizza and a movie.

Lexi: I know! Jonah is going to be so excited!

Lexi: And honestly, I am too.

“Oh, really…” he whispered with a grin.

Connor: How come?

Lexi: It will be nice to have a couple of hours to myself. Now that he’s in preschool, it’s great because I can work with no interruptions, but I haven’t had any me time in months.

Well, crap. Do I really want to ruin that?

Lexi: What about you? Any big plans while Annabeth’s out?

He debated for a moment whether he should mention what he had planned for the two of them, and then decided he might as well.

Connor: Honestly? I was hoping the two of us could have dinner together.

Connor: Alone.

She didn’t respond right away, and he figured she was trying to find a way to let him down easily. Disappointment hit him like a wave.

After what seemed like forever, he saw the dancing dots alerting him she was typing.

Lexi: Can we stay in?
