“Shut up.” I looked at my shoes. I shouldn’t have been surprised by Beckett’s taunts, but I was too damn tired for it.

“Anyway, I’m kinda glad you were here. I had to ask Amelia a question, so it worked out.” He paused, then looked at me closer. “Hey, you wouldn’t be up for watching our dogs, would you? When we go on our trip in a couple weeks?”

Amelia dropped her gaze, but not before I saw a flash of shame in her eyes. “I would’ve, but I have some medical bills to pay, so I’m picking up some shifts. I wouldn’t be home enough for them.”

I still didn’t know Amelia all that well, but I knew she’d had a rough couple of years. When I’d first met her, she’d been trying to get out of an abusive relationship. She’d come a long way since then, but experience told me those kinds of wounds were the slowest to heal. Vaguely, I thought I remembered Brad saying something about her being in counseling. Fuck, maybe I really was distracted.

“Um, yeah. Yeah, I can.”

“Great, thanks. You ready?”

“Depends. Didn’t you bring me a coffee?”

Beckett raised a brow. “Fuck no. You’re lucky I pay attention, or you would’ve owed mea coffee for being late.”

“I’m not late.”

“No, but you would’ve been if we were still meeting at your house.” The corner of Beckett’s mouth curved up, revealing a playful grin. Something told me he was just getting started.

“Come on, let’s go.”
