I kissed her forehead. “That’s right, Rugrat.”

Jake showed up a little after one in the afternoon, a full two hours after he was supposed to.

“Everything okay?” I asked as we met him in the front yard.

He lifted Harper to give her a squeeze before letting her run off to play again. “Yeah. Just had a quick meeting with my boss.”

I arched a brow. “About?”

He gave me a wicked grin that had my stomach tying in knots. Ihatedthat look, because it usually meant Jake was about to do something that meant trouble for me. “I was giving him my two weeks’ notice.”

“What?”I barked. “You’re quitting?”

“Yeah. I saw an opening in Reedsport for a new officer and called right away. The captain was thrilled. He remembered me from when we were working together to find Michael. Anyway, he accepted so I thought I’d go and see what the fuss is about.”

Jake laughed. “Didn’t think you’d get rid of me that easily, did you? Someone’s got to keep you in line and I doubt Preston will. He can’t handle you the way I can.” He reached into his truck and tossed me a bag. “Here, got you this for the drive.”

I looked inside and tossed it back. “Fuck you! I was drunk, asshole!”

He barked out a laugh, then made a big show of walking over to my Explorer to toss the bundle of paper barf bags on to the passenger seat. “At least you’ll be throwing up inyourcar this time, not mine.”

I ignored him. “Are you ready? I’d really like to hit the road now.”

“Let’s do this.”
