I shook my head. “When I spoke to Beck this morning, he said Michael wasn’t confessing who he sold the box to, but he did say he used some of the money for a ride to Savannah, so Beck thinks he sold it before he left.”

“That’s good.”

“Yeah. Hopefully, it’s close.”

“So, is he coming back then?” Amelia asked, hopeful.

I couldn’t stop my smile. “Yeah. He said he’d be here around four, if all went well.”

Her eyes went wide. “Preston! That’s like twenty minutes from now!”

“What?” I glanced at the clock. “Oh, shit!”

I scrambled to pick up, but Amelia put a hand over mine. “Get out of here. I know how to clean your supplies.”

I kissed her on the cheek then ran up to the loft, showering quickly before slipping into a pair of skinny jeans and my favorite red t-shirt. It was only early August, but I was already longing for the cooler days of fall so I could wear sweatshirts instead. I loved the feeling of being wrapped up in an oversized turtleneck.

Amelia was already in the kitchen when I returned and gave me an approving look. “I love the jeans. Where are you meeting him?”

“At the dock,” I said.

I snatched my phone off the counter and turned to leave but Amelia called me back.

“I…” she paused, folding her arms over her chest. “I just wanted to say thanks, for everything. I think I’ll head back now that I know Michael’s in jail.”

“You sure? You don’t need to go if—"

“I’m sure. I’ll be okay.”

I could tell she wasn’t as sure as she was trying to portray, but I also knew my headstrong friend wasn’t going to change her mind no matter what I said. I pulled her in for a firm hug. “You need anything, just call me, okay? Love you.”

“I will. Now, go! Don’t be late.”

With Lady at my side, I walked the half mile to the docks trying to ignore the strange palpitations of my heart. It had been just over a week since Beck left to find Michael and now I was literally minutes away from seeing him. Would his warm hazel eyes be green because he was happy to see me again? I could only hope.

I was still lost in my thoughts as I turned the final corner, so I hadn’t seen the person there until I walked right into them.

“Ooft!”

Lady whined at my distress, then began doing her little happy dance.

“Sorry,” the man said, wrapping both hands around my upper arms to steady me.

I stiffened, because I knew that voice. God, how I knew that voice. I gulped as I looked up to see Beckett’s gorgeous face mere inches from my own and felt heat color my cheeks. This close, it was easy to see that his eyes were in fact a brilliant shade of green, reminding me of fresh cut grass on a warm summer’s day. It relieved me more than I thought possible.

“Thought I’d meet you halfway,” Beckett said with a smile.

“How… how did you know where I lived?”

He arched a brow. “We dropped your dogs off on our way to see Amelia in the hospital, remember?”

“Oh.”

He chuckled and finally dropped his hands.

I was feeling a bit shy, but I also needed to reassure myself he was okay. “Can… do you mind if I hug you? I’ve been going crazy with worry.”

Beckett let out a relieved laugh and pulled me against his broad chest. I slid my arms around his waist and held on for dear life, only relaxing when I heard the steadythump-thumpof his heart under my ear. I doubted any music in the world would sound as lovely as Beckett’s heartbeat.
