“Yes, and Trooper just left. Are you okay?”
“I’m fine but Carlos is pissed. I’ve never seen anyone so mad in all my life. It was crazy, Sophie. He was infuriated. I saw it in his eyes and body language, but he never said a word to them. He was calm when it was all going on, which was weird. All he said was for me to call you and let Trooper know.”
“That’s good he didn’t fight it. It could have been much worse but Trooper said he’s smart. He doesn’t have a record and all of his guns are registered.”
“I know.”
“You know?” I questioned.
Maddie laughed. “Yes, Sophie, I know. He told me everything the first night we met. You don’t think I knew who he was as soon as I laid eyes on him? I asked and he was honest. I appreciated that.”
“So you knew he sold drugs?” I asked, surprised.
“Yes, why do you sound surprised?”
“I don’t know, I just thought maybe…”
“Maybe you were the only one who could fall for a thug? I like my men a little rough around the edges too, Sophie.” Maddie laughed. “I didn’t know that until I met him, but let’s just say… it’s a good fit, in every sense of the word.”
“Maddie!”
“What? You’re the one who warned me about that perfect fit.”
I tested my water, and since it felt right and the tub was full, I shut it off before going to get a towel and washcloth.
“Well, I can’t say anything against that. So, what now?”
“I don’t know. He called a little while ago and said they were just holding him. They didn’t have anything on him, but they could hold him for seventy-two hours if they wanted. He said he doesn’t think they will because his lawyers are really good.”
“Wow, is this us? This is really our lives?”
“I guess so, but I like him, Sophie. I’ve been happier with him since we met than I was the three years married to Richard. It might not last, and it might not be perfect, but I’m happy.”
“Good. You deserve that.”
“And if Richard tries to fuck me in the divorce, I’ll let Carlos pay him a little visit.”
“Maddie, no, that’s not right.”
She burst out laughing. “I’m just playing… maybe.”
“You are a mess.”
I stripped out of my clothes and stepped into my tub. I talked to Maddie a bit longer, then just relaxed. Once I was out and dressed, I got cozy on my sofa with my laptop and started working on my new account. For now, I’d get caught up so when Trooper returned I could focus on him.
Chapter 19
Trooper
“That doesn’t make sense, Troop. They didn’t just randomly stop me. I know better than that. Hell, you know better than that. Something’s up?”
It had been a week since Los got stopped, and out of habit, just to be cautious, he switched things up to make sure he didn’t have any issues.
“Yeah, I’m thinking that too, but who though? You got problems with anyone right now?”
“Shit, no more than usual, but I really don’t know. You know me, Troop. I have no fucks to give about anybody who has issues with me. They can suck this steel.” Los held up the gun on the table in front of him.
“You dumb for that shit, man, but I feel you. You know I’ve been playing it in my head, and honestly, it doesn’t make sense. The people we fuck with don’t fuck with cops. They might run up on you or try and take over one of your spots, but they ain’t fucking with the cops like that.”
