Chapter 6
Sophie
“I’m not going. This is crazy,” I mumbled, looking around my bedroom. I had a sea of clothes thrown across my bed while I scanned them with my phone in my hand, talking to Maddie.
“Sophie, you’re going. You need this and he insisted that you be there.”
It had been a little over a week since I’d last seen Trooper. After he showed up at my office and we drove around the city getting to know each other, he took me back, got my number, and promised to call. Four days passed and I didn’t hear from him, which had me a little in my feelings. But I let it go and focused on work. Then, out of nowhere, I received a call from him like he hadn’t just ignored me for the past four days. We talked for a while then he invited me to a gathering at his place a few days later.
I declined several times, but he insisted and refused to take no for an answer. I didn’t hear from him again until two days later when he called to explain he was sending a car to bring me to his place since he would have to stay and wait for his guests. I agreed hesitantly, still not feeling his disappearing act, but Iwanted to see him, so I gave in. Now here I was with my second thoughts.
“Go with me. I don’t know his friends, so I’ll be alone.”
“You won’t be alone, Sophie, he’ll be there.”
“You know what I mean, Maddie.” I plopped down on the bed and fell on my back, staring up at my cathedral ceiling. “I don’t even know what I’m supposed to wear.”
“Sophie, get it together. Find something sexy that shows off your body. The only person you need to impress tonight is Trooper.”
“Maddie, please, just go. You can just stay for a little while then leave once I check things out.”
“Sophie, you’re twenty-six years old, you run a Fortune500 company, and you have more money than the national treasury. Why are you acting so insecure? One party with a guy you haven’t been able to stop talking about since the day you met him. Don’t let him steal your confidence. It’s not like you to be so insecure, but on the other hand, it lets me know you’re really into him, which is even more reason you need to go.”
Rolling my eyes at the ceiling, I sighed and sat up, running my fingers through my freshly straightened hair.
“You’re right. I can do this. I’m about to get dressed so I’m not late.”
“Good, send me a picture after you’re dressed so I can make sure you’re dressed appropriately.”
“What am I, five?” I stated and rolled my eyes again.
“No, you’re modest. Show off those boobs and curves, Sophie. Do you know how many women pay for what God blessed you with?”
I laughed at the aggression in Maddie’s tone. She was naturally slim, more like a meal away from anorexia, but not for lack of eating. It was just in her genetic makeup because she couldn’t gain weight to save her life. I, on the other hand, wasslim thick. I had nice thighs, a slim waist, and plenty of ass. My breasts were nice and round, adding to my physique. I loved my body and spent a lot of time keeping it looking its best.
“Fine, but let me go and I’ll send you a picture when I’m done.”
“I mean it, Sophie, don’t forget.”
Maddie knew I was lying because I didn’t want to hear her mouth about what I wore, but she let it go.
After I ended my call with Maddie, I decided on a baby doll, sapphire dress. The soft material flowed around my body and dropped low about mid-way down my back, so I couldn’t wear a bra. It stopped just about mid-thigh, so I had to be mindful about keeping my legs crossed when seated or I would expose my goodies. I purchased this dress months ago after I fell in love with it, but never found it appropriate to wear to any of the functions I attended. Most of the events I frequented were business-related, so this type of attire wasn’t acceptable.
Once dressed, I slipped on a pair of navy Stuart Weitzmans that matched my dress, sprayed my body with my favorite scent, and put on a pair of simple diamond studs. I slid two white gold bangles and my watch on before grabbing my purse and keys, shutting everything off in my room, and heading to my living room.
Trooper was bound and determined to send a car to bring me to his place, which I objected to more than enough times. But since he had to be there to make sure things were ready and he couldn’t get me himself, he made sure a service picked me up. I just hoped I wasn’t making a bad decision by accepting his offer. I knew nothing about him yet I was about to walk into his world totally alone.
“Damn, you must be Sophie. You’re sexy as fuck, but not what I expected. The way Troop talks about you, I was expecting gotdamn librarian. That you definitely are not.”
I smiled awkwardly at the caramel face checking me out. He was handsome, to the point where he was almost pretty, but in a manly way. His complexion caused his hazel eyes to blend into his face and made them nearly invisible. His low cut was full of waves that extended down the sides of his face into a neatly trimmed beard covering his chin. He was extremely easy on the eyes, but I had no interest in him at the moment. I looked past him, searched the small crowd, and didn’t see Trooper.
He stepped aside and allowed me to enter, using his free hand to close the door. The other held a partially-filled glass with brown liquor.
“Come on. Troop’s around here somewhere. I’m Carlos, by the way. You can call me Los.”
I nodded as he placed his hand on my back and led me through Trooper’s home. It was beautiful and nicely decorated. As we moved through, I admired the architecture more than I paid attention to the people who filled it until we reached the balcony where I laid eyes on Trooper, surrounded by two women. He looked pleased by their attention and they were equally giddy about his.
As if he sensed me staring at him, he looked up and smiled, waving me toward him. I was a little put off that he hadn’t come to me, but I let it go.
