“Yup.” That’s my Kady.
***
When I return home, Kady’s sprawled out on the couch reading. Soft country music fills the background. She’s totally lost in what she’s doing and doesn’t even notice me at first.
“Hey,” I call out.
“Oh.” She slaps the book down and rushes to the door to meet me.
I like that.
She rolls her bottom lip and nibbles on it before asking, “Is everything all right?”
“Better now.” I lean in and press a kiss to her lips. Something’s changed since I left earlier. She’s not hesitant now. No, Kady pushes up on her tiptoes and wraps her arms around my neck. The full weight of her pushes up against me. I’m not expecting it and end up stumbling back a step, until my back’s against the wall.
“Whoa. What brought this on?” I ask. Not that I don’t like the eagerness.
“I missed you,” she whispers.
“Yeah?”
She stands back and nods slowly. “I’m so…I’m so sorry—”
I place a finger over her lips. “No more, baby. You don’t have to apologize to me again. We’re good.” She meets my eyes. “I hated having you gone. But maybe we both needed the time to figure out what we want from each other.”
“I really don’t…deserve you, Blaise. You’re too good for me. You’re going to be sorry one day,” she says in a rush.
This is the rawest I’ve ever seen Kadence, and I really wish I hadn’t left her alone earlier. She’s obviously been wrestling with some things, and I should’ve been here. “Kady, I’ll never be sorry for loving you.”
“How’d it go at the club?”
“Fine.” Kady’s never really asked me about anything to do with the club. While she loves being on the back of my bike, that’s about the extent of her interest in MC stuff usually. It fills me with pride that she’s taking an interest. I tuck a few loose strands of hair behind her ear. “Told my dad about us.”
She sucks in a deep breath. “You did?”
“He kinda already knew.”
“He wasn’t mad?”
“Not at all.”
I gently wrap my hand around her upper arm and lead her to the couch. “We need to talk.”
The look on her face is hesitant. Almost scared. “What’s wrong? Is Red Storm claiming I stole something else now?”
“No.” Not yet anyway. “Need you to go to a party with me tomorrow. At the Iron Bulls’ compound.” I watch her face for her reaction and don’t quite get the one I expect.
“Oh my God. I don’t know if I can show my face there again.”
“Again?”
“That’s where I met up with my sister.”
“Oh.” Not sure how I feel about her settin’ foot in their clubhouse without me.
She straightens up and pins me with her attentive girlfriend face. “Tell me. What do you need me to do?”
“Romeo’s club came the other night because I told them you were my ol’ lady.”
