Page 97 of Don't Try Me

"Did you have dinner?" she asks Jake, going into mom mode.

"Dean made spaghetti," he says.

Brook smiles at me. "And you didn't invite me?"

I walk over to her. "You could come over tomorrow. We're having leftovers."

"Okay, I'll be here."

Seriously? I was kidding. But I'm happy she suggested it. I'd love to see her again.

While she works with Jake, I go in the bedroom, remembering what she told me about Jake opening up to her when I'm not around. He never tells me what's going on with him so maybe I can find out through Brook.

After the tutoring, Jake goes in his room while I come out to pay Brook.

"You don't have to pay me," she says as I take a ten from my wallet.

"Why wouldn't I pay you?"

"I'm considering this practice for when I tutor other people. You're doing me a favor letting me tutor Jake."

"Nice try. Now take it."

"Give it to Jake for doing a good job tonight. I think he's going to get an A on that test."

I pick up her hand and put the ten dollar bill in it. "It's yours."

Keeping hold of her hand, I lock eyes with her and notice her breaths speed up. She drops the ten dollar bill on the floor and the next thing I know she's kissing me.

Wrapping my hands around her delicate face, I kiss her back, slipping my tongue in her mouth. She grabs hold of my shirt with both hands, like she's making sure I don't pull away. I should, but I can't. Since our kiss last night, all I could think about is when I could do it again.

"Um, guys?" I hear Jacob say.

Brook yanks away from me, smoothing her hair as she smiles at Jacob, her cheeks flushed. "Hey, Jake, did you need something?"

I turn back and see Jake standing just outside his room. Shit. I didn't want him to know about Brook and me.

"What is it, Jake?" I ask. "What do you need?"

"The wifi isn't working."

"Did you check the modem?"

"No. I wasn't sure if I should when you guys were..." He laughs a little, then shuts it down, noticing the serious look on my face.

"I'll check it."

The modem is across the room, on a table near the kitchen. Jake would've had to pass by Brook and me in order to get to it. I see the wifi light is out so I unplug the modem, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in.

"It should be good now," I tell him, wanting him to go back in his room.

After he does, I go up to Brook. "Sorry about that."

She shrugs. "It's okay. I don't mind if he knows. Do you?"

I'm not even sure what we're talking about. Knowswhat? That we kissed? Or does she think it's more than that? Does she think we're dating?

"Brook," I say with a sigh. "We should probably talk."
