"Brook?" I ask, making sure I didn't drift off again and miss whatever he just said.
"She had on this tight little black dress. Black heels. She looked all classy and shit, like she didn't belong there, but the guys were all checking her out."
She changed clothes to go to the party? And put on a dress? She had to have been on a date, but with who? It can't be JT. There's no way she'd go for him.
"You going or what?" Danny asks.
"Yeah." I get out of his truck. "You coming inside to get a drink?"
"Nah, I'll just wait till I'm back at the party. Tell Jake I said hi."
"I will. See ya." I shut the door and go inside the house.
I find Jake in his room, sitting on the bed with the laptop.
"Hey." I startle him and he slams the laptop shut.
"What are you doing home?"
I stand next to the bed. "You looking at porn again?"
"No," he says in a defensive tone that tells me he was definitely looking at porn. I don't care. I did the same thing when I was his age. Still do.
"You do your homework?"
"Not on Friday night." He gets up and goes to his dresser to get his phone from the charger. "Why are you home so early?"
"I got bored. Didn't want to be there."
He turns and smiles at me. "You get any?"
"None of your damn business."
"That would be a yes," he mutters.
I walk over to him. "You need anything before I go to bed?"
"You're going to bed? It's not even eleven."
"I'm tired. I haven't slept well this week. If you want food, get it now so you don't wake me up going to the kitchen later."
"I'm good. Just finished a frozen pizza."
"Did you leave me any?"
"No. I was really hungry. Sorry."
"Don't worry about it. I can have something else." I walk to the door. "Goodnight."
My stomach's growling but I decide to skip eating and go right to sleep. I tell myself not to dream of Brook again, but thinking of her in that dress Danny was talking about? I have a feeling she'll be making an appearance.
Chapter Fifteen
Brook
"What happened last night?" Eve asks when I answer the phone.
It's Saturday afternoon and I'm doing homework because my mom's still at work. She said she'd be home by dinner and would take me out but I'll believe it when I see it.
