"You never know until you try. Maybe you should try football next. We could use some more people on the team."
I laugh. "I don't think so. The one and only time I tried to lift weights, I broke my wrist. That was enough to tell me I should avoid any kind of athletic activity."
"You've never played sports?"
"I played tennis but I wasn't very good at it. And I was on the swim team but I didn't like getting up early for practice."
"What do you like to do?"
"What do you mean?"
"I mean outside of school. What do you like to do?"
I'm not sure how to answer that. I don't think anyone's ever asked me.
"It's not a hard question," he says when I don't respond.
I sit down on the couch. "I don't know."
He chuckles as he sits beside me. "You don't know what you like to do?"
"I thought I did but now I'm not sure."
"What does that mean?"
"I used to love shopping but then I'd bring everything home and be bored with it. Half my closet was stuff that still had the tags on it. I'm not sure if I actually liked shopping or if I only liked it because my friends did."
"Do you like it now?"
"No. I don't have money. It's not fun to shop when you don't have money."
"Besides shopping, what do you like to do?"
"I really don't know," I say, staring blankly at the door.
"Maybe you should figure that out."
I should, but I have no idea where to even begin. I feel like I no longer know the person I used to be. My life has completely changed to the point that I don't even know what I like to do anymore.
"This is usually when you ask whatIlike to do," Dean says.
My eyes dart back to him. "Oh, yeah. Sorry. What do you like to do?"
"Watch sports. Play football."
"I never would've guessed that," I say with a smile.
He smiles back. "Actually, football's become less fun now that I have so much riding on it."
"You mean a scholarship?"
"Yeah. There's a good chance I'll get one but you never know. Only takes one injury to put you out of the game for good."
"What if that happened? What would you do?"
He sighs, putting his arm up along the back of the couch. "That's something I try not to think about."
"Sorry," I mutter.
