"Um, Brook?" Eve says, trying to hold back a smile.
"What?"
I feel a wave of hot breath by my ear. "No sex, huh?" He moves so close his lips graze my ear. "You shouldn't rule it out before giving it a try."
Chapter Six
Brook
How long has he been standing there? And how much did he hear?
Why didn't Eve tell me Dean was right behind me?
I whip around to face him. "We weren't talking about you."
He stands up straight, towering over me by a good foot, maybe more. "Last I checked, I'm the only Dean Sanders in school."
"Do you always listen in on private conversations?" I ask, placing my hands on my hips.
"It's kind of hard not to when I'm standing here waiting for my dumbass friend to remember his locker combination."
"Got it!" the guy next to him says, a big grin on his face. He shoves his arm past Dean, sticking his hand out toward me. "I'm Danny."
"Brook," I say, shaking his hand.
He leans down to me, throwing a glance at Dean. "I wouldn't have sex with him either."
Dean laughs. It's the first time I've heard him laugh. It's a deep powerful laugh. The type I'd expect to come from his large muscular body.
"You're the new girl?" Danny asks, grabbing a book from his locker.
"Yes." I move over a little so I can see Danny better and put some distance between Dean and me.
"Where you from?" Danny asks.
“Northern suburbs."
"So you're rich," he says, closing his locker.
"Not anymore. And no, I don't want to talk about it."
"Wasn't gonna ask." He shuts his locker and steps up next to Dean. "Must suck having to transfer your senior year. You still talk to your friends?"
"Yeah, but not very often." I glance back at Eve. "We should go. The bell's about to go off."
"We have time." She steps up beside me, slinging her arm around my shoulder. "Brook was just telling me about her boyfriend."
"You have a boyfriend?" Dean asks in a tone that implies he doesn't believe me.
"Why do you sound so surprised?" I say, feeling annoyed and offended.
He doesn't answer, which irritates me even more.
"His name is Chad," Eve says to Dean. "They've dated two years and are thinking about getting married."
Dean and Danny both laugh.
"You're joking, right?" Danny says.
