“Oh, nothing,” I said, smiling at her before it fell as I remembered Alek once telling me not to.

If you aren’t happy, don’t pretend to be.

Elsie frowned. “Are you sure? You don’t look like it was nothing.”

I shook my head. “I’m fine. Really.I’m just thinking about rehearsal.”

Her frown deepened, though she thankfully said nothing. Elsie was extremely smart. I highly doubted she believed my half-lie. But maybe she remembered the fact that I still hadn’t told Jules about her plan to retire and possibly move away. Maybe she decided to help me keep a secret of my own.

My suspicions were all but confirmed when she spoke again.

March 3rd

Nikolai

Are you back at the ballet today?

Aleksandr

Yes.

Nikolai

Right. Dumb question. You always are.

Will you do me a favor while you’re there?

Aleksandr

No.

Nikolai

Can you put in a good word with blondie?

I’m trying to get a ballet beauty too.

Aleksandr

No.

Nikolai

WHAT?

Why not?

Aleksandr

Out of every ballerina there, she is the second least likely to accept you.
