Stunned, Mac remained silent for a moment before saying, “Who else knows?”
“According to Alex, only his father’s lawyer.”
“What about his family?”
“No siblings. His father’s dead…and he doesn’t know about his mother. He thinks she’s dead too.”
“Cousins? Aunts? Uncles? What about grandparents? Dragons live a long time…certainly there must be some of those relatives still living.”
“I…I don’t know. I got the feeling he’s all alone.”
“I see,” Mac said thoughtfully. “All the more reason for you to bring him here.”
“And we are back where we began,” Sawyer said, now more agitated than before.
“I know…and I’m sorry. I’d tell you if I could but you’re just gonna have to trust me…at least till you speak with Jackson and Hunt…when I tell you this is the safest place for Alex.”
Sighing, Sawyer said, “Fine…I’ll call Jackson now. I’m not sure it will help since Alex and I haven’t discussed where we’ll live. but at least I’ll know why you think the Blackwood Pack is where Alex should be.”
“Thank you…and after you hear what they have to say, call me.”
“Will do…wait! If Alex is an omega, does that mean he’ll get pregnant when I claim him?”
“Not in this case. Sorry.”
“Nah, that’s okay. It’s a relief in a way. I’m not the fatherly type.”
“That’s a discussion for another day. In the meantime, call Jackson.”
“Yeah, yeah…bye, Mac.” Staring at his darkened phone, Sawyer speculated on what his cousin and brother could possibly say that would convince him Jackson’s pack was the safest place for his mate. Shaking his head at the total insanity of his thoughts, he rose, intending to check on Alex before he called.

Leaving Daniel with Steel, Jackson headed to Zane’s computer room, thinking about his brother’s cryptic message. Knocking once, he opened the door, smiling at David who was sitting on his mate’s lap. “Hey, are you ready for next week?”
“Yes, Alpha, Adam was most helpful in clarifying the issue for me,” David said softly, tilting his head in respect.
“Cuore mio, you’re going to be great!” Zane murmured, nuzzling his mate’s neck. “Want to know why I know that?”
Shifting his eyes to Zane, David nodded, a tiny smile appearing.
“Because I know everything! And right now, I know you’ll be fair and just when you rule on the issue,” Zane whispered, before kissing David’s cheek. “And that means you’ll be great!”
“I agree with Zane,” Jackson said. “The Fates picked the right person when they chose you.”
Jerking his head around, David stared at Jackson, blushing at the compliment. Suddenly shy, he lowered his eyes before murmuring, “Th-th-thank you, Alpha.” Then, slipping off Zane’s lap, he whispered to his mate, “Come get me when you are finished, okay?”
“Absolutely.” Zane watched David leave before turning to his brother. “You better sit down for this.”
Lowering himself into a desk chair next to Zane’s, Jackson said, “That doesn’t sound good.”
Shrugging, Zane said, “Can’t say because as far as I can tell, Alex Fouché doesn’t exist. There’s no record of him in the High Council’s databases…no certificate of birth listed anywhere…not even in the Dragon Master Files.”
“How can that be? He’s a dragon, for fuck’s sake…all dragon pregnancies and births are recorded. It’s the law.”
“I know…but for whatever reason, Alex’s birth isn’t listed.”
“What about his mother’s pregnancy? Did you find that?”
