Chapter 15

“Remy,” Mystia said softly, “mon chéri, please.” Standing slowly, she reached out, touching Remy’s arm. “Please listen to me…you don’t have to leave…trust me…your brothers will be safe…you will be safe.”

Seizing on Mystia’s words as a lifeline, Remy raised his face, looking at her. “I don’t understand. You said the Governing Council will destroy me…how can my brothers be safe if I’m not here for them?”

“Sit, please,” Mystia murmured.

Eyeing the mess on the floor, Remy sighed; if he’d been blessed with stronger magic, it would be so easy to clean up, but that was impossible. As he began to bend down, he heard his guest speak.

“May I?”

“What?” Remy asked, looking up, then, realizing what she was asking, he straightened up. “If you wish.” Seconds later, Remy felt her magic wash over him, piercing his soul.

“There,” Mystia said, waving her hand at the clean floor.

Giving a small smile, Remy slowly sat down. “What spell did you cast before…when you were outside?”

“A protection spell. Anyone searching for a magic user here would not sense you or your brothers,” Mystia replied.

“You can hide us?”

“Yes, I was afraid someone else might have used a spell similar to mine to locate the magic user who could make a light sphere.”

“So, the Governing Council guards can’t find me or my brothers, right?”

“Yes, at least for a few days.”

“Time for me and my brothers to escape,” Remy mused, already making a list of what he had to do.

“No,mon chéri…not escape, but time for you to claim your Fated Mate.”

Glancing up sharply, Remy sputtered, “What good will that do? He’s a wolf shifter…he doesn’t stand a chance against the Governing Council guards.”

“He will protect you and your brothers from anyone who tries to harm you. I can’t say more than that but please, trust me.”

“I don’t know,” Remy said softly, trying to fight his instinct to flee. It’s what his parents had done the last time he created a light sphere and that proved to be the right choice back then; it was only logical he should do the same thing now, except…Unlike me,my parents were powerful magic users.

“Remy,” Mystia said, gently, “please give Carson a chance. He’s a good person.”

“How can I be sure he’s my Fated Mate? According to my research I wasn’t supposed to have one.”

“That’s nonsense!” exclaimed Mystia. “Every paranormal, and that includes you, has one, but not everyone will find theirs. But you are one of the lucky ones…your Fated Mate will arrive at the chateau tomorrow.”

“What if he doesn’t want me?” Remy said, so quietly it was more a whisper than anything else.

“Why would you say that, mon chéri?”

Looking down, Remy shook his head, unable to answer her question; he knew he’d have to reveal the truth to his mate—that he was nothing but a servant according to the Governing Council laws.

“It won’t matter to Carson,” Mystia murmured. “He’s been looking for you for a very long time.”

“You’re wrong. Once he finds out I’m only an inept magic user, he won’t want me.”

“That may be true,” replied Mystia, “but do you intend to make that decision for him?”

Glancing up, his eyes narrowing, Remy said, “No, I didn’t say that, but I damn well know what my value is in the magic world and so do you, or you wouldn’t be here ‘protecting’ me if I was strong enough to do it myself.”

“And you honestly think that will matter to Carson?” asked Mystia.
