“Dylon and Cody are ready,” Jackson said. Then, glancing at an incoming message on his phone, he saw it was a reply to one he’d sent when Zane mentioned his appointment with the fleet owner. “The helicopter is on its way. Are you packed?”
“I asked David to do it for me. I figured we’d be going.” After closing his laptop, he shoved it into his backpack. Then looking up at his brother, he added, “This is the first time David…”
“I know,” Jackson said, quietly, “I promise you he’ll be safe.”
“It’s not that…although I do worry about that, too…but it’s the first time he’ll be sleeping alone since we met and I know he doesn’t do well when I’m not there…in the bed with him. Even if I’m across the room, he has a hard time sleeping. I was wondering if there’s any way not to leave him alone at night?”
“Hmm…” Jackson thought about it, then said, “What about a pajama party with Theo, Norm, and Quin?”
Zane’s face lit up. “Oh, that would be perfect!”
“I’ll speak to Theo. I’m sure he’ll be willing to help.”
“Thanks,” Zane said. Picking up his backpack, he added, “Just don’t let him know I said anything, okay?”
“Mum’s the word,” Jackson chuckled. “You better get going.” Giving his brother a hug, he whispered, “Be safe, and make sure you come back in one piece.”
“No problemo,” grinned Zane.
Chapter 12
“Let’s go, guys,” Zane said, after they landed in New York. “I just got a message from the owner of the cab company wanting to know where we are.”
Grabbing his overnight bag, Dylon said, “Tell him we’ll be there in thirty minutes.”
“Are you sure?” Zane asked, dubiously. “It’s rush hour and even on a good day, it’s supposed to take at least an hour.”
“But not if we fly,” Cody said, grinning. “There’s a helicopter waiting for us.”
“Cool,” Zane said, sending off a reply before picking up his backpack. After thanking the steward, he followed Dylon and Cody down the plane’s steps onto the tarmac and then over to a black SUV waiting for them. Getting in the rear seat, Zane set his backpack between him and Cody. Hearing a message ding, he slipped his phone out of his jacket pocket and read it. “Hey, everything’s cool with the owner.”
“Good,” Dylon said, sliding into the front passenger seat next to the driver. “The heliport, please.”
“Yes, sir.”
Less than five minutes later, the driver stopped in front of a building. “Here you are. Have a good flight.”
“Thanks,” Dylon replied, as he slid out the door, waiting for his mate and Zane to join him before saying, “helicopter’s on the roof.” Taking Cody’s hand, he led them into the building and to the elevator. Once in, he punched the top button, then turned to Zane. “I think you should be the one to ask the owner for permission to access the GPS.”
“Me?” Zane’s voice squeaked in surprised.
“Yes, you. Do you have a problem with it?”
“Other than ‘why me’?”
“You come off as a friendly guy, non-threatening and…”
“What my mate is trying to say,” said Cody, chuckling, “is he has trouble dialing back his aggressive demeanor…so as not to appear intimidating.”
“Gotcha,” Zane smirked. “Okay, I’ll do it…but you do know I don’t usually do stuff like this…I’m a behind-the-scenes guy.”
“You’ll be fine. C’mon, times-a-wastin’,” Dylon said, as the elevator doors opened, revealing a man waiting for them.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Royd, I’m Tom. Everything is ready for you,” he said, handing Dylon a thick envelope. “The keys are inside, along with your hotel reservations and my contact information.”
“Thanks, Tom. I’ll let you know when we’re ready to check out.”
Nodding, Tom opened the door to the roof. “Call at any time, sir.”
