Fifty-Five

Istayed behind whileAsher took Violet to the airport. He’d taken care of getting her a flight while I’d made sure she had a rental car waiting for her and a hotel room set up.I sent her a text message with all of the information and then laid on my bed, trying to figure out how we got here in the first place.
Things had been going so well that I hadn’t seen any of this coming. While I understood that she needed to be there for her dad, I couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t let us be there for her.Even if she wasn’t ready to tell her dad about us, she could still let us help however she needed. It wasn’t like we were planning to waltz into his hospital room and declare our love for everyone to see—though I didn’t have any objections to that either.
Violet had pulled away and withdrawn herself, just like she did the day we took her in when she broke up with Jared. It was like watching all of the confidence she’d gained over the past few months had just vanished in thin air, and I hated that.I hated that she felt that she had to pick and choose between being there for her dad and letting us support her.
An hour later, Asher returned and knocked on my door.It was open, but I still appreciated the respect he showed by not just barging in.
“Everything went smoothly, and we made it just in time. She texted me before I left the airport to let me know she had boarded the plane.”
I nodded, too heartbroken to respond.
“I texted Capshaw to let him know what was going on, just in case Violet needs more time off from work,” he continued, leaning against the door frame.
“He asked if we needed anything, and I told him no.When I explained that Violet went by herself, he had some choice words for us.”He shook his head and laughed.
“Do I even want to know?”I asked, finally speaking.
“Probably not.”Asher shrugged.“But I’m going to tell you anyway.”
I arched an eyebrow, having a feeling that I wasn’t going to like where this was headed.Asher pulled out his phone and looked at it.
“He said, and I quote, you guys better get your fucking asses out there and take care of the woman you love.If you need help financially, I’ll take care of whatever you guys need. But don’t just sit there and claim to love her, and then not be there for her.” Asher put his phone back in his pocket after finishing reading the message.
“Did you tell him thatshedidn’t want us to be there?Or that we were trying to respect her wishes?”
“No.”
I frowned, pulling my head back as I stared at him.
“I didn’t say anything because he was right. How the fuck can we sit here and say that we love her, and then let her face this all by herself? That’s fucked up, and you know it.”
I threw my hands in the air and stared at him.
“What the fuck are we supposed to do when she made it abundantly clear that she didn’t want us there? It’s not like we don’t want to be there for her, but it’s a little hard to do that when she doesn’t want us to.”
“Don’t you see what happened?”he asked, tilting his head to the side as he stared at me.“Violet got scared and instead of leaning on us to help her, she freaked out and ran.Violet is so used to people hurting her and not loving her the way she deserves to be loved that she didn’t recognize it when she saw it.So instead of sitting around here and wallowing in self-pity, we’re going to get our asses on the next flight out and be there for our girl because she deserves that and so much more.”
“What if she resents us for overstepping?”I asked cautiously.
