“Why?”he asked.
“Because I don’t want them to know we’re together yet.”
She knew he didn’t like that answer, but he did as she wished and turned down a road that would get them to the place she wanted.
They pulled up to the grove of trees and parked.
She turned to him and squeezed his hand.“I’m sorry that you’re upset, but I promise to get things figured out quickly.”
“Good.I can’t go a day without at least talking to you.”
“I’ll call you in the morning with the phone you gave me.”
He nodded.“Okay.”He pulled her to him, and she let him take her mouth like he was starved.
He lifted his head.“You should go before I change my mind.”
She scrambled out of the car.She smiled before she closed the door and watched him drive away.
She couldn’t get the smile off her face, and she needed to get it together. If her father or sister saw her this happy, they would know something was up.
Jessica was headed back towards the house when she heard her sister call out for her.She quickly dropped to her knees beside a bed of flowers and started pulling weeds.
“I’m over here,” she called out.
Bambi came around a corner and stopped when she saw her.
“What’s up?”Jessica asked as she continued to pull weeds.
“The maid said you went out earlier.”
She scrambled to find an explanation.“I had a doctor’s appointment. If you needed me, you could have just called.”
Her sister’s eyes narrowed.“But you’re not sick.”
Jessica rolled her eyes at her sister.“I’m not.It was my yearly gynecology appointment to get a Pap test done.Have you gotten yours done lately?”
Jessica could see the speculation in Bambi’s eyes and knew how to get her to leave. She wiped her hands on her jeans before she scratched her face, leaving some dirt behind.
“Oh, my God.You are so gross,” Bambi cried out.
“What?”she asked innocently.
“You have dirt all over you.”
It looked like Bambi was losing it and about ready to vomit.
“If there isn’t anything you need, you’d better go.Just standing there is making you dirty.”
“It is not,” she bellowed.
“Do you feel the wind?”
“Yes.”
“The wind blows everything around, you know, like dirt and dust, and it has to land somewhere.”
With a shriek, Bambi turned and hurried back to the house.
