I laughed dryly. “It’s not, but I don’t have to prove that to you or anyone. I don’t know why you came here, but you’re wastingyour and my time. So either buy a pastry and get out or just get out.”
He was about to speak again, but the door indicated someone else was entering.
My eyes immediately landed on my sister walking in with a pharmacy bag and a scowl.
“Look at God. I knew he’d put your slimy, baldheaded ass in my sights. Didn’t know what I’d do, but at this moment I’ma leave you alone because you already got an ass whooping scheduled in front of the whole world. That’s something I don’t wanna miss and I damn sure wouldn’t jeopardize it by busting a cap in your ass for being here.” She stood next to me by the time she finished speaking.
“Damn, Siyah, we don?—”
“Get the fuck out of my sister’s shop before I settle for the instant gratification of busting you in your shit in here.”
He laughed. “You've always been a shoot first type of person, huh?”
“Get out, Nathanial. You have no business here,” I responded as calmly as I could. I was still in the spin cycle with too much going on right now and the last thing I needed was this fool.
“Selah, you good?” Duke had finally brought his ass to the front, drying his hands with a napkin.
“Yes, Nathanial was just leaving.” I cut my eyes between Nathanial and Duke.
“Cool, fuck you too then. When that nigga is finished with you, don’t come running back to me.”
I was about to respond but Siyah handed me the pharmacy bag. “Shut your mad ass up and get out of here, dickhead.”
It took everything in me to not burst out laughing because I left it to Siyah to say some of the things she said.
Nathanial exited my bakery.
“Aight, gorgeous. Go piss. I got the front.”
I laughed as my nerves went haywire. I mean shit, what if I was actually pregnant? What the hell was I going to do?
A million peptalks from Siyah later and I was on my way to accepting the results Clearbluehad given me. I was also on my way to the house, to find a way to tell Indiri what I’d found out. My hands were sweaty and my feet wouldn’t stop jumping. I kept getting tripped up in my thoughts. This was scary, the type of thing that made me want to run and hide. I couldn’t do either. I was already two minutes from the house and something told me Duke wouldn’t pull over and let me get ghost if I asked.
The moment we pulled into the driveway, I felt my stomach flip.
Shit. Shit. Shit.
Everything seemed to be moving so fast because before I knew it Duke had opened the door for me to get out. Then, the entire twenty-three steps to the door, I overthought. I was about to reach for the handle when it opened. I immediately locked eyes with Bigs.
“What’s up Ms. Cake Lady?” he greeted me.
I smiled politely. “Hey Bigs, how are you?”
“Good. I’m boutta grab wings. You want some?”
I nodded crazily. “Um, yes.” I was about to reach into my purse for cash but he shook his head. “Nah, I got it. Six wings with mild sauce, right?”
“Yes, please.” I smiled hard, momentarily forgetting my woes as I walked into the door. All I wanted was to take a shower and get some sleep, but I needed to talk to Indiri first.
When I entered the house, Indiri was seated on the couch with his phone in his hand. He looked up from his phone, eyestracing my frame before he looked back at it. Something was wrong, but I didn’t know what. He looked irritated.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, setting my purse on the sofa before I stepped in front of him.
“You tell me.” His tone was disinterested and heavy. He still didn’t look up from his phone.
I sighed, confused. “Hello?”
He still hadn’t responded.
