“Good. I’ll see you then, beautiful.”
“Okay.”
We hung up less than a second later and I immediately heard Jordyn enter the door ordering food that Khia, my nutritionist, had prepared.
“So I’m here as your friend, but also because Remy really wants me to talk you into training somewhere other than Watertown. Things are getting bad down there with the waterboys and all that gang mess.”
I shook my head. I had been training at Blair Body Blitz since old man Ron was the owner. Now it was owned and operated by his son Killah, who I damn near grew up with. He didn’t play that street shit when it came to his business, so I wasn’t too worried.
“I know and I told him you and Killah go way back, but he’s adamant that I at least try to talk to you as your friend about your safety.”
“Yo, I let y’all give me Bigs’s big mouthed ass, now c’mon. It ain’t like I’m out here going on missions and in the streets.”
Jordyn laughed. “I hear you loud and clear. But I definitely just heard you talking about going to see someone tonight. You’re grown, but I need you to think about the state of the world and everything you have coming up. I.e. a fight, some press conferences, and weigh-ins. What if we train in The Bluffs? That way it’s a little secluded and unknown, less movement and worry, plus we can?—”
“I’m grown, Jordyn.”
“And I just said that, but everybody is on eggshells about your safety, and so am I. Do you love me, Indi?”
I rolled my eyes to the ceiling, because she knew I loved her stupid ass. “Don’t pull that shit on me.”
“It’s just temporary, and it’s more spac— I know you’re the talent here, but do you want to make my life easier? Then just say yes. The Bluffs isn’t their idea. It’s mine and I think it’s grand.”
She held my food out for me to take with a big ass grin on her face. “Please.”
“Fine man, damn. How big is the property?” I accepted the food.
“I don’t know yet. Give me until the end of the week to finalize things. I’ll have some ideas in front of you by Friday.”
I side eyed her.
“I really came up with the idea on the spot.”
I laughed. “I bet.”
“You should send for your friend to come here though. Less movement and more of a safety precaution. I mean, unless you don’t want her to know where you live.”
“No. I'ont give a shit about none of that. Selah is good peoples and she doesn’t care about all that shit that everyone else does. Plus, I’m already knowing you’re tryna get me to invite her over so you can meet her.”
“Nah. I’m not. I have a date, so I won’t be here.”
“A date with who?” I dug into my food then looked up at her.
“Well maybe not a date. An appointment.” She winked.
My stomach soured immediately because I really looked at Jordyn as my sister. “Yo, what the fuck? I wanna hear about that.”
“You asked. So are you gonna have Bigs pick her up and bring her here?”
I shrugged. “I’on know. I kind of wanted to see how her bakery looked.”
“Bakery? Is that some sort of euphemism?”
“No. What, you thought she baked for the wedding out of her kitchen? She’s actually something different out here.”
“Oh, well I can’t wait to meet her.”
I shook my head at the thought. It wasn’t that I didn’t want Selah meeting my folks, because I wanted nothing more. It was the fact that shorty had just gotten out of something seemingly serious. The second time I saw her, she had been crying in the ice crem aisle of a fucking grocery store. More than likely, she was still carrying that hurt from ol’ boy, but I had her around my people and found myself thinking about her randomly throughout the day. This was some careless emotional shit.
