“I’d feel better if I knew what the hell was going on,” I responded. Sin took my hand and squeezed it. Remembering him mentioning babies to his mother had me really concerned.
“Well, you fainted in the middle of your game,” Dr. Williams said.
“Why?” I questioned because I knew it was more than that.
He chuckled. “You’re anemic and pregnant, Miss London. Have you had no symptoms? Missed period? Morning sickness? Excessive fatigue?”
I couldn’t answer because my mouth was stuck on mute, much like the look on my face. On the inside, though, my heart went to the moon—and that wasn’t a good thing. The machine started going off again.
“I can’t be pregnant,” I mumbled, more to myself than anyone else.
“You’re indeed pregnant,” Dr. Williams confirmed. “A tech is coming in just a few minutes to confirm for us, but your urine says you’re with child. Your red blood cells are low, which we’ve gathered is from low iron. You could’ve very well have had low iron prior to becoming pregnant, but pregnancy definitely plays a part in low iron levels. We’ll give you some iron supplements here to get you started. The rest of your lab work is completely normal. We’ll be keeping you for a few days to make sure there’s nothing we’re missing. Right now, we’re giving you plenty of fluids, and your body needs rest.”
“Wait—no,” I quickly said. “You don’t understand. Ican’tbe pregnant.” Now, I was about to start crying, because what the fuck?
Dr. Williams’ brow furrowed. “As far as your labs are concerned, you’re well into your first trimester.”
I glanced at Sin, who stared at me. He had a million questions dancing through his mind, I could tell. Saying what I was about to say would have Sin side-eyeing me, but I had to get some understanding. There was no hiding my past from Sin. Hell, we’d never discussed pregnancy and kids, so now, the shit was being shredded by the fan.
“Dr. Williams…” I turned back to him and said, “There’s been a mistake. I—I… My body won’t let me have children.”
Dr. Williams grunted while Sin’s hand squeezed mine again. My palm was sweaty, uneasiness flowing through me.
“I don’t have any of your previous medical history, but tell me what makes you think you can’t carry a baby? Your labs are completely—”
“I heard what you said about my labs!” I snapped. “Labs don’t mean shit! At some point, I’ll lose the baby!” I broke out crying just as the monitors sounded off again.
“Baby, relax. Please,” Sin pleaded.
“Who’s your previous physician, Miss London? I’ll request records to be sent to a fellow colleague of mine. I had another obstetrician set to see you in the morning, however, I believe my good friend, Dr. Coco, would be good for you. Is it okay if I have her pay you a visit while you’re here?”
Sin wiped my tears while I solemnly nodded. I gave him the name of my previous obstetrician and the name of the hospital where I’d been treated during my miscarriages.
“I’ll get right on this. Expect Dr. Coco first thing in the morning. Until then, please try to relax. Your vitals are stable and from a medical standpoint, as long as you get the iron you need, everything looks good. Once you hear your baby’s heartbeat, I’m certain you’ll be okay. Before you leave this hospital, you’ll have all your questions answered. Okay?”
Dr. Williams was so kind and thorough that I apologized for snapping on him. He chuckled and waved it off.
“I understand your frustration. You’re in good hands here. You’ll be in good hands with Dr. Coco also.” He nodded to Sin and asked him if he had any questions.
“She hasn’t eaten tonight. Can I give her something?”
Dr. Williams said, “Of course. I’ll have the staff come in and get an order for you.”
With that Dr. Williams walked out of the room. I immediately burst into a fit of tears.
“Sin,” I cried. “I’m so sorry, but—”
His fingers gently landed on my lips.
“Don’t apologize another time, Baby.”
“But I should’ve told you,” I reasoned.
“In time, I’m sure you would’ve. I never used protection, and you never raised any concerns that you wanted me to. Honestly, I thought you were on birth control. Don’t look like that, Baby,” he chided when my eyes fell.
“Sin, please don’t think less—”
“Naomi ‘No Campbell’ London. I love you. Nothing’s gon’ change that, aight?”
