There’d always been a variety of different people on Earth, the rest just hadn’t died out like most humans thought.

“We were just formed with more of the magic of Earth than regular humans. The magic tempered what most would see asour more animalistic side and evens it out.” Stopping us as we got to the thickest part of the forest, I led him off the trail and leaned back against a tree so I could wrap him in my arms. “Magic going wrong can fuck that up in frightening ways, but that’s not the natural balance it wants.”

Stroking his head and down his back, I looked for any hints that he wasn’t comfortable but didn’t find any.

“That’s one of the reasons Alphas rose to defend their packs. We defend it physically and emotionally.” Real life wasn’t like romance novels no matter how fun they might be. “Whether you see it as Mother Nature or something more ancient and magical, the world is built to find balance. Alphas rise to help keep balance.”

“So you’re basically like the Alpha and Omega all wrapped up into one.” His eyes sparkled even though he tried to keep a straight face. “So you’re not looking for your Omega to give you pups and balance the pack?”

“No.” That would be weird. “Alpha leads the pack. It’s usually males but not always. The Alpha has a second who’s usually like HR if we were a company. Everyone goes to him to complain about random stuff and he brings me the important bits.”

Barely holding back a laugh, he shook his head. “After seeing how you reacted at the gas station, I can understand why he might be important.”

Maybe.

“A few more details that might be important are why your anger didn’t worry me and how I’ve basically moved into your house.” His inner math teacher came to the surface as he raised one eyebrow and barely held back the need to cross his arms over his chest. “Correct?”

Math teachers were hot when they were frustrated.

Chapter 17

Dorian

“Do you want me to confirm what you already know or should I say something cute and distract you with a kiss?” His ridiculous response was the answer I knew was coming. “We’re in my favorite part of the forest, so I could distract you with more than just a kiss.”

Really?

Shoot.

He grinned.

I needed to work on keeping a blank face.

“We’re far enough out I could chase you through the woods and claim you like a needy omega.” His eyes sparkled with what I thought was his wolf side showing through as he leaned down and kissed my neck. “I’ve seen enough of those books to know what a naughty omega would look like.”

On one hand it was good that I didn’t have anything like that to worry about, but on the other, he’d chase me through the woods and claim me?

“I’d strip you down and get you ready, then you’d escape your Alpha and I’d have to chase you.” Nibbling up my neck, he made a pleased sound as I shivered. “When I finally caught you, yourheart would be pounding and I’d pin you to the ground to claim you.”

Really?

Swallowing was harder than it should’ve been but that was probably because his teeth kept sending mixed signals through me. “What…what does claiming mean? If…if there’s no omegas then there isn’t a knot, right?”

How much had the books gotten right?

Oh.

That laugh.

“I can smell how much you want to be knotted. You’re not just a sexy man, I think you’re a naughty sub.” Braun’s arms tightened around me as I shivered and my legs went wobbly. “An Alpha’s mate is always the balance of what they need. Always, Wölfchen.”

Always?

Well, he needed someone to manage his life…he wasn’t getting fed on his own and I was very good at handling difficult situations.

“What…what kind of things would your mate be your balance for?” Yes. That was a better way to address it. “I’m…I’m kind of boring.”

That was what my last few dates had said anyway.
