Trevor, in his office at Serenity Police Department (SPD), texted Sebastian.
You’re needed. Get back to me asap, the text read.
He dropped his phone on his desk, musing. Sebastian’s work assignment was highest-priority, and he could not just leave, he would have to be relieved by another KSRT officer. Trevor pulled up the duty roster on his computer and read through it. Besides himself and Sebastian, the KSRT duty roster contained the following names: Macalister “Mac” Niles. Graeme Kynock. Crew Arcoal. Beckett Oswego. Harlan Mundelein. Jaggar Lockport. Troy Burbank. Trent Burbank. Canyon Wheeling. Timber Wheeling.
Mac and his mate, Rogue, were following a lead on a possible One True Mate by the name of Sage Greene. Graeme had to stay mobile. Crew and his mate Dahlia were following a lead on Abigail White. Beckett and his mate, Cerise, were guarding the young with Jaggar and his mate, Leilani. Harlan only took orders from his mate, Eventine, now that she was back from the dead. Troy and his mate, Reed, were with Trent at the Harlem Reservoir, following a lead on Trent’s mate. Canyon and Timber were up Crimson Bluff working on the missingfoxeninvestigation, but the roster showed them returning soon, which made them his best bet. He’d already messaged them a dozen times with no response. They were brothers, both as smart aswolvencame, but without a speck of respect for authority. They tended to work by themselves, in a grouping of tunnels below the police station that they called ‘the bunker’.
His phone chimed. Speak of the devil—it was Timber saying he and Canyon would be there in ten minutes. Perfect.
His phone chimed again: Sebastian calling.
At the same time, Troy called him inruhi.Trevor—
Hold on a sec, Troy.
On the phone, Trevor greeted Sebastian, his most mysterious KSRT officer. Sebastian grunted a hello. Trevor laid out the situation at his house.
“Yeah, get some relief here and I’ll check it out,” Sebastian replied gruffly.
“Will do.”
Trevor hung up and returned to Troy.
“Okay, Troy, what’s up?”
We found Trent’s mate. She doesn’t know what she is yet. Trent’s working on it.Troy hesitated, then said—my mate says Conri brought Sage Greene flowers last week, right around the time the earthquakes started. She thinks they’re dating.
Trevor was dumbfounded. Reed had come to live at VF a few days ago and had told them that she’d worked with a female named Sage Greene who fit the One True Mate prophecy, but Trevor had assumed this female would be fated to one of hiswolvenofficers.
Conri the bear?Trevor said.
Yeah.
Bruin’s brother?
How many bears named Conri do you know?
I just… are they mates?
All Reed knows is he brought her flowers. She says Sage called him a hose man.
Trevor groaned.I don’t even want to know what that means.
I saw Conri that night and later Sage was our waitress, but I didn’t know her name.
What did she scent like?
Strange. Like a human, mostly. A little like Ella and the others also, but everyone’s scent has changed. All the mates have an underlying citrus-sweet scent, but it fades some when they’re claimed. I always thought of it as the angel scent—I guess it was there, a hint of it, sure.
Whose scent has changed? What are you talking about?
Ah… Ella’s, Dahlia’s, Heather’s, Willow’s, Leilani’s… All their scents changed after they were claimed, and Ella’s scent changed after she fought Khain, and again after she had young—
I haven’t scented any changes in anyone.
You just don’t pay enough attention, bro. You’re too caught up in other shit.
Other shit like what?
