‘The audacity.’ Ben shook his head.

‘You have no idea. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. She’s a nasty piece of work. I wouldn’t put it past her to turn up to this wedding wearing a white dress. That or one of those nude dresses that show off your nipples like the celebs wear on the red carpet.’

‘Surely not?’

‘Wanna bet?’

‘No, given what you’ve told me, you’re probably right. And your ex?’

‘Oh, boy.’ I blew out a frustrated breath. ‘Another self-centred arsehole. He’s a car salesman and lives up to the stereotype. Smooth talker, slipperier than an icy pavement. Thinks he’s the most beautiful man that ever walked the earth. And has the misguided view that he’s brilliant in bed.’

‘How bad was he, if you don’t mind me asking?’

‘He was totally selfish. He never even asked if I… y’know. It was all abouthim.’

Ben shook his head with disappointment, then let out a heavy sigh.

That about summed up my sex life with Trent. I got way more stimulation from reading my books than sleeping with him.

And he always made me feel likeIwas the problem, when I was the one that suggested new positions and tried to make an effort to pleasehim, but it was never reciprocated.

In the end I’d lost interest and just used to lie there and let him do his thing.

‘How did you two meet?’

‘I was buying a car…’

‘Got it.’

‘I’m embarrassed to say that I fell for his chat-up lines. In my defence, he seemed like a much better prospect than the men in our town. He wore a suit, seemed smart, obviously had a nice car and his own flat.’

‘So would you say he was a bit of a show-off?’

‘Yep! The ultimate narcissist. He totally loved himself and was obsessed with his dick. Sometimes I’d catch him admiring it in the mirror like it was the most magnificent thing ever created, when it was average at best.’

‘Yikes.’ Ben winced.

‘And he was really flashy. Everything was for show. Like my sister, he was constantly trying to prove that he was the best, that he had the best. Best watch, car, all the trappings.’

‘That isn’t the kind of guy that I would’ve pictured you with.’

‘Yeah. Now I see that we were too different. He wanted to party, I wanted to stay home and read. He and my sister are probably better suited, but the way they got together was totally fucked up. Cheating is never okay. But sleeping with your girlfriend’s sister behind her back is the lowest of the low.’

‘I couldn’t agree more,’ Ben said. ‘Clearly you’re better off without him.’

‘Absolutely. So yeah, that’s them.’

‘How many people will be at the wedding?’

‘I think it’s smallish, so no more than fifty people.’

‘Still a significant amount.’

‘I come from a big family, so that isn’t for us. If they had the wedding in the UK, I reckon there’d be hundreds of guests. That’s probably one of the things that motivated my brother andhis fiancée to have it abroad. And at such short notice. They were probably hoping that fewer people would come.’

I considered mentioning the fact that it might have something to do with my future sister-in-law being knocked up but decided not to. It was up to my brother and Debbie to announce it whenever they were ready.

‘Don’t blame them. Weddings can be expensive. What would you like me to bring? Is there a list or something?’
