‘Actually, let me carry your case downstairs,’ Ben offered.

‘You don’t have to,’ I said. ‘I’ll manage.’

‘I think you’ve had a memory lapse and forgotten how much stuff you packed for a three-day trip and how heavy your case is.’

‘Okay, guilty. But I needed options! Sometimes you have to pack double the amount of clothes and shoes you’ll actually need, just in case.’

‘Right,’ he said. ‘You sure you don’t want to change here instead of going back to the B&B?’

‘I thought about that, but the clean clothes in my case are more beach, wedding options that aren’t really right for work.’

‘Got it.’ He nodded before sliding on his slippers, lifting up my case, then carrying it down the stairs like it was lighter than a feather.

‘Thank you,’ I said as he opened the main entrance door.

‘You’re welcome.’

We stared at each other.

I wanted to kiss him.

One last time.

His eyes darkened and I wondered if he felt the same.

Our faces inched forward and our lips were just millimetres from touching when a familiar voice sounded that made me jump out of my skin.

‘Well, well, well. What do we have here?’

I turned around and saw Jess and Theo standing behind us with giant grins on their faces.

Busted.

‘Jess! Theo!’ My voice came out all squeaky like I’d just sucked on a helium balloon. ‘What are you doing here?’

‘I could ask you the same question!’ Jess’s lips twitched with amusement. ‘You know the library entrance is on the other side of the building, right?’

‘Er, course.’

‘You okay, bro?’ Theo grinned. ‘Did you lose your clothes? Not sure that’s appropriate attire for work. You two wereworkingtogether, right?’

‘Sod off.’ Ben narrowed his eyes at his brother.

‘I should, er… go and… get ready.’ I gripped the handle of my suitcase.

‘I’m starving! Maybe we should get breakfast together.’ Jess raised an eyebrow that saidlooks like we have a lot to talk about.

‘Yeah, sounds good,’ I said sheepishly.

‘Cool. Meet at Love & Lattes in, say, twenty minutes.’

‘But I’m due to start work,’ I replied.

‘It’s okay. We’ve got extra cover this morning.’
