“Because your company takes care of its own. Because you proved her preconceived notions about werewolves wrong.Because mages are raised in ignorance in their ivory towers, and don’t know anything about werewolves but what they’re told by their elders and their horribly skewed literature.” I started to roll over, to face him, but he held me there.
“You don’t give yourself enough credit.” He kissed the back of my neck, softly, but then slid his lips down my back, kissing a trail along the sensitive skin there.
One of his thighs pressed between my legs, pushing them apart, then with one hand, he pulled my top leg back over his hips.
With the other hand, he expertly positioned his cock at my entrance and pushed inside. I was still loose and lubed up from the night before, so it slid inside without resistance, and I just... every bit of tension slid out of me along with it, as my body relaxed against him.
I locked my top leg around him as he started to slide out, not willing to allow him free of my body, but he didn’t try to pull all the way out. No, he set a slow, steady rhythm, just a small motion of his hips as he reached his top arm around and cupped my cheek, then ran it down my neck, my chest, and over the thin layer of hair on my belly as he fucked me, movements so languid that I thought maybe we could continue just like that forever.
I kind of wanted to. No more stress or drama or pack wars or even work. Just Jax, lazily fucking me from behind while both of us were still glazed with sleep.
When he reached further down and wrapped his hand around my cock, though, it got a little less lazy and a little more... well come on. Who didn’t want to get off when someone had a hand on them?
I couldn’t do much to change the rhythm he was setting up, though, so I drifted as he fucked me in time with his hand stroking me, letting myself settle into the absolute perfection of the moment.
Too soon, I could feel my body reaching its peak, and tried to tell Jax, but all that managed to come out was a gasp, and the world went white around me, every nerve electrified as my body tensed and I came into his hand.
It only took a moment longer, me riding the wave of my own orgasm, before Jax was tensing behind me, his breath catching as he, too, came.
We lay there for a while after, wrapped up in each other, quiet and sated.
When we finally got up, showered, and dressed, I realized that Kosuke was nowhere to be found. Probably for the best, considering the sex. I hoped for half a second that he’d managed to peel himself off and go away, but that was mean. He was... problematic, but learning, I thought.
That feeling was strengthened when we went downstairs to find most of the pack just finished making breakfast, and he was sitting there in one of the empty chairs at the dining room table, watching them all with more interest than disgust.
He looked up at me and nodded. “This one is quite the caretaker,” he said, motioning to Maia.
I wasn’t sure what I could add to that, because it was true. Maia loved to take care of the pack, almost as much as Jax. Maybe she’d have made a good alpha. It was why she was in charge of HR for the company, after all, that urge to protect.
So I just nodded at Kosuke, because he was right.
Then something occurred to me.
The thing Kent had been working on for the company, basic potions that could be purchased premade. It had mostly seemed to me like a good way to get people in touch with each other, producers and consumers, and while I hadn’t loved the consumerism of it all, we did live in a capitalistic society, and putting magical producers in contact with their potential customers was actually a good service on our part. I thoughtgiven the oversight we needed to do, we weren’t going to make much, if any money at it, but... that wasn’t what mattered right this moment.
I went and sat in my chair at the dining room table, and since Kosuke was sitting in Jax’s, it put us right next to one another. “Tell me, what do you know about luck magic?”
He lifted a brow at that, then his eyes narrowed, and he smiled. “Oh, that’s clever. You can’t cover all possibilities, because who knows what that Grant creature will try next. But you can make it more likely for your young man to survive whatever it is.”
“It’ll need to wear off before the challenge, because I’m not allowed to interfere with that magically.”
Kosuke smiled and nodded. “Of course. I would never have you interfere with your pack’s laws and politics. They’re your people, and you are beholden to their rules.”
Something about the way he emphasized it was strange, but I couldn’t be worried about that because of the rest. He was saying... I was in the pack, and he didn’t want me to break the rules. It was maybe one of the most pro-werewolf things I’d heard him say, his sort-of-crush on Seth notwithstanding. I wasn’t going to question him.
“After breakfast,” he said, smiling and rising from Jax’s place at the table. “We’ll take your alpha down to the lab and I’ll set up the potion to make sure he survives without any further interference from that... ass.”
I blinked in shock when he disappeared, because he hadn’t even called Grant a beast.
Incredible.

It was the most bizarre experience of my life, standing in the lab at the Crescent Building, watching Dakota converse with someone I could neither see nor hear.
Kosuke led him through preparing a potion, and I was relieved, yet again, that I wasn’t a mage. No, I’d never really wanted that, but there were times it would’ve been nice not to have to prove my decency in any mixed supernatural company.
