After you check up on your brother, come and see me. You and I weren’t done talking.
He stepped over his threshold and shut the door before I could even respond.
Chapter 51
After accompanying Nolan back to our family home where he’d be convalescing—whether he wanted to or not, since one didn’t argue with our mother when bedridden—I sat by his side while Mom fussed with his pillow and Dad cooked up some comfort food. It pained Nolan to eat, but he knew it would pain our father if he didn’t, so he spooned in the chicken broth.
When Mom went to fetch him a painkiller, and Dad went to tidy up the kitchen, Nolan touched my shoulder with the arm not strapped to his torso. “I’m sorry those two assholes targeted you, Pinecone.”
“I’m sorry you just called me pinecone.”
He shot me a lopsided grin. “You secretly love the nickname.”
I rolled my eyes. “Yeah. Yeah.”
“So, you and Liam, huh? Is that something I need to get used to?”
“Nope.” My cheeks began to prickle.
“You sure?”
“Yep.”
“In case my opinion matters, I like him.”
“How fortunate for him, considering he’s your Alpha.”
“I meant, I like him for you.”
“Well, itisa step up from Grant.”
Nolan’s blue irises dimmed. “Don’t ever speak that bastard’s name again. He never deserved you, and he knew it.Everyoneknew it.”
“Except me.” I sighed. “I wish I’d listened to all of you when you told me not to date him.”
“Hey, we all make mistakes. He was your mistake.”
“Did you ever make a mistake?”
His mouth curved. “More than one.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really.”
“With someone from the pack?”
“Maybe.”
“Do I get a name?”
“Nope.”
I fake-pouted. “Not even for your favorite sister.”
He grinned. “Look, I swear that if I ever get serious with someone, you’ll be the first to know.”
“Cross your heart?”
