“He was when I left.”
Liam’s eyes gleamed in the dimmed lighting. After a minute, he said, “I conveyed the message.”
“Not just apassablypretty face.” Lucas shoveled another bite into his mouth and winked.
I tossed a piece of bread athispassably nice face, which just made him chuckle and Momtskat our antics.
Thank you.
My eyes zipped to Liam’s. The heat in them made me exceedingly glad to be sleeping over at my parents’, because my willpower was nonexistent.
“Just hope it works,” I said before getting up and piling empty plates and dishes. After two trips to and from the kitchen, I told Mom I was going to grab some things at my place and meet her at home.
Adalyn watched me, then her gaze slid to Liam. Thankfully, he made no move to follow me, yet, halfway home, I heard heavy footfalls crush the snow behind me. My heart thumped in time with my stalker’s feet. I pulled in a lungful of frigid air, expecting it to be laced with Liam’s intoxicating scent.
Not Liam’s, but it was familiar.
Chapter 35
Iturned around. “Why are you tailing me, Grant?”
“Saw you leaving by yourself and wanted to make sure you got home okay.”
“As you can see, I’m getting home just fine. Now tell me why you’re really here?”
“Because I’m sick of this.”
I tilted my head to the side. “Of what?”
“Of the way it’s become between us.” His hands were stuffed in the pockets of his low-slung jeans. “I messed up, Nik, and I didn’t realize it until—”
“Until I was no longer crippled?” I finished pleasantly.
“No. Until you got that infection, and I heard Darren utter sepsis and how the Sillin wasn’t working.”
My heart pumped, half from exertion and half from having to revisit that sucky chapter in my life.
“I was so scared.”
He’dbeen scared? Nate and Dad had cried. I’d never seen either of them cry.
Because Grant clearly wanted my pity, and I had none to give, I spun away from him and bolted down the path toward my cabin.
“I tried to visit you in the clinic after your relapse, but your brothers wouldn’t let me in.”
Those few days had been a blur, so I didn’t remember hearing about his visit. Not that it would’ve made a difference. I hadn’t wanted anything to do with Grant by that point. I’d just managed to put my heart back together and had been working overtime on putting my body back together.
“Hey, can you quit your mad dash?”
“It’s cold, and I don’t want to travel down memory lane.”
He grabbed my bicep and spun me around. “I heard you went home with Liam.”
I shrugged him off. “It’s none of your business.”
“He’s just using you to get information about Lori and Nate.”
I crossed my arms. “What information could he possibly get from me that he can’t get from someone else?”
