I glanced down at myself, my blood warming when I noticed the spots I’d rubbed had turned so transparent the color of my black bra and the perkiness of my nipples were both visible. I undid my braid, then divvied up my hair and let it hang loosely over my shoulders.

“Got a minute, Nik?” Ads, who’d sat with her grandmother up until now, nodded to the bathroom.

I got up and followed her, sensing from her tense expression a heavy conversation coming on, one I wasn’t particularly looking forward to but which needed to be had. Would it be about my stance on Lori or where I stood with Liam?

I sort of hoped it would be the former because I had no clue what the hell I was doing with Liam, besides contemplating a second-night stand and falling a little too deeply for his son.

Chapter 34

Adalyn locked the door behind us in the single toilet stall. “Tell me everything.”

“About?”

“You and Liam, obvs,” she whispered.

“So, this isn’t about Lori?”

“We’ll get to Lori, but first I want to know how you got from one-night stand to playing house.”

“We’re not playing house.”

“Nik, you were at his house earlier. And then you had Storm on your lap during theentiremeeting. And then, post-meeting, Liam heads toyou.”

“BecauseI had his son.”

“Sweetie, I heard people whispering about the nature of your relationship with him.”

“You’d think they’d have better stuff to talk about.”

“Yeah, you’d think. So tell me. Start to finish.”

As I filled her in, not leaving anything out since Ads was a detailmonger, her face went through a dozen different expressions before settling on grim concern. “Don’t accept a second-night stand.”

“Why not?”

“Because, Nikki, you’re not the type of girl who does casual relationships.”

“Maybe I am.”

She raised one eyebrow.

“Just because I’ve neverdonecasual doesn’t mean I’m incapable of it.”

Adalyn leaned against the sink top. “What happens once he returns to Boulder for a stretch of time?”

“I go back to living like I was before he got here.” I shrugged a shoulder. “Besides, it’ll only be for a few months.”

“You won’t miss him?”

I clutched my elbows.

“Exactly!”

A knock on the door made my heart hold still.

“Not close to being done in here,” Adalyn shouted. “Use the men’s room.” Once the door across the hall clicked shut, she dropped her voice, “I’m all for you having fun, but I’m worried about your heart.”

“My heart’s not involved.”
