I smiled, and so did Nolan, who crouched and picked it up. I was glad that at least one of my brothers’ bloodlust had quieted, even if it was just temporary.
Liam unhooked his son from the chair and picked him up. “Unless you find proof Lori’s lied about this being the first time she’s turned someone, she’ll remain a Boulder for the rest of her natural life. Understood?” He slid one big palm up and down his son’s back.
Nash muttered, “Understood.”
Chair legs scraped, then Ads said, “You’re about to have a mutiny on your hands, Liam.”
“And where will you stand when thismutinyarises, Adalyn?”
I looked at my friend, at her smudged eye makeup and splotched cheeks. I waited for her to say: with him. But she didn’t.
Instead, she said, “With Nash.”
“Nash, Nolan, where will the two of you stand?” Liam enquired.
“On the side of justice,” they said at the very same time, proving once again how nine months sharing an amniotic sac had provided them with a mind link worthy of mates’.
Nash tucked his chair under the table. “If I find proof—”
“If you find proof, you bring it to me.” Liam’s sharp voice made my brother’s head jerk in ascent.
My gaze locked on Ads. She bit down on her lip apologetically. I wasn’t mad at her, but I was a little disappointed that she’d jump aboard theeliminate Lori trainwithout concrete proof.
“What about you, Pinecone? What side will you stand on if we find proof of past infractions?” Nolan asked.
“On the side of justice, too, but I still think your energy would be better spent finding a solution for the halfwolves.”
Nash’s blue eyes lingered on me, and although they were bursting with aggravation, they were also crammed with affection. Affection that would hopefully quench his thirst to crucify Lori. Sighing, he came over and bent down to kiss my unbruised temple.
After he stepped back, Nolan leaned over and hugged me. “Liam, you better talk to the pack before someone decides to take justice into their own hands. Everyone’s pretty agitated.”
Liam’s jaw clenched and then his voice resonated inside our minds.Boulders, meeting at Pondside tonight at eight to discuss the new developments in the halfwolf case. If anyone, and I do mean anyone, misbehaves in any way, they’ll be punished accordingly.
Nash speared his fingers through Adalyn’s. “See you guys tonight.”
As he tugged her toward the door, she mouthed, sorry. I wondered what she was sorry for. Choosing Nash over our Alpha? I didn’t hold that against her.
Nolan followed them out, then shut the door on the crazy world we lived in where one shifter had venom potent enough to mutate the human genome.
Fingers brushed my shoulder, stealing my attention off the shut door. You okay?
I craned my neck. “You think she did it before?”
Liam’s chest stilled as though he were carved from clay instead of flesh. “No.”
I sighed.
Lucas pushed back from the table. “I’ll just grab my phone.”
I frowned. Once he’d disappeared down the hallway, I asked, “What was that about?”
“I want Lucas at Lori’s until the meeting.”
Storm had his head tucked in the crook of his dad’s neck and his lids closed.
“You think someone might actually try to harm her?”
He laid his cheek against his son’s head. “We’re warm-blooded creatures.”
