I can’t imagine.
He had to live through that loss. Most supernatural beings who lose a mate die soon after from heartbreak.
But to lose two?
Rorik can’t die, but he can still feel pain. He still felt their connections break.
Vara continues. “Rorik will dump the ‘body’ out back, and Farrah will try to save her.”
“The human is a willing participant. Rorik will feed from her, but she won’t really die,” Layla explains to Farrah who nods in understanding.
Thorne starts handing out masquerade masks. “Wear these so you’re not identifiable. Staged or not, we can’t have the hunters seeing all this royalty, or former royalty, on camera.”
I take my mask and turn to Farrah.
“Are you sure this is going to work? Don’t you think your family is smarter than this?"
She frowns, taking my hands in hers and bringing them up to her mouth. She kisses my knuckles, like I've done to her many times before. The move makes my stomach twist. She knows I’m anxious about this entire thing but instead of being mad or annoyed, she’s listening to my concerns.
“They don’t know about supernatural nightclubs. I’m sure of it. And if they do know these clubs exist, I’m confidentthey’ve never been inside one. I can use these videos as my ticket to finally join the hunt. Maybe I’ll suggest they send me in for more recon at supe nightclubs. Or a supe sex club.”
I huff a laugh, but my humor dies quickly. “Be serious, Mouse.”
That gets me more knuckle kisses.
“I’m sorry. I am being serious about this. Look…” She locks eyes with me, begging me to trust her. I do. I just don’t trust them. Her brows furrow at the thought that I clearly didn’t mask. “They wouldn’t hurt me, Locheran. They may have been disappointed when I didn’t join, but I’m still their flesh and blood.”
“They might not hurt you, but if they find out you’re my mate, they could kidnap you. Hold you in a dark dungeon. They know I’d come for you. And I would, with a vengeance. I’d burn down the world to find you.”
She smiles, looking down. “Please don’t burn the world for me. No more death and destruction. Start a bonfire in the woods if anything.”
I tug Farrah to my body, and she yelps. I don’t care if everyone in the room is staring at us now. Because my mate is being an adorable and funny rodent right now.
A bad, bad little mouse.
She inhales a sharp breath atthe thought.
I grip her hair at the nape of her neck and pull until her head tilts up, allowing me to lean down and hover my mouth over hers.
“I don’t think you understand, Farrah,” I say, gently placing a kiss on her lips. She tries to deepen the kiss, but I pull back. “Not only would I burn down the world for you, but after the ashes have cooled, I’d rebuild every structure brick by brick just to burn it all down again.”
“Romantic,” she whispers. “A little dramatic, definitely psychotic, but romantic.”
This time I kiss her properly. A ‘tongue worshipping her mouth, my lips bruising hers, and my fangs making her bleed’ type of kiss.
When we come up for air a few minutes later, the entire room claps.
Farrah pulls away from me and I give her a wink.
“Now that we’ve had a show, let’s get this party started,” Vara says, smiling and shaking her head as she turns to walk away.
Istand along a wall, holding a beer, while I watch my mate walk through the crowded space. She’s perfect, acting scared yet determined. A few other humans have been scattered throughout the space, paired with supernatural beings, and told to act like they’ve been drugged or hypnotized.
Once the footage has been shown to Farrah’s family, it will be deleted. That way they won’t have a chance to send it out to the world and expose us as dangerous and murderous monsters.
I stay to the shadows and stalk Farrah because I can’t stay along the wall far away from my mate with this many supernaturals near her. She spots Rorik walking out a back door, holding hands with a young woman in her twenties. She’s petite with black hair, doe eyes, and skin that’s decorated in various tattoos. A vampire donor, guessing by the paleness of her skin. Farrah follows the pair and sneaks out the door a minute later.
I find Vara and stand next to her while she watches the feed from Farrah’s glasses on a tablet. Rorik does his part, burying his face in the human’s neck. He bites her and begins feeding. Fake blood is added to make it appear more violent. The human proceeds to pass out.
