“I’m going to make this right,” she whispers.

“My love,” I begin and her eyes jerk up to mine. It’s not quite me saying I love her but it’s close. “You were a child when you rescued the vampire that killed your mother. You stepped away when you were fifteen. You’ve agreed to help us. You don’t have to convince us you’re not like them.”

She nods but doesn’t speak.

“And to be honest, the daughter of a hunter being mated to a gargoyle is like some sort of karma bullshit.”

This makes her laugh, and I pull her on top of me, hugging her head over my heart.

It beats faster in response to her nearness, and I hope she knows that every beat, every breath of life I take now belongs to her.

She owns my heart, and I hope she’ll forgive herself enough one day to give me hers.

Chapter 21 – Farrah

It took three weeks for Locheran and I to fully solidify the bond, mostly because we only allowed ourselves to have spicy time on weekends. Locheran didn’t want me to miss out on any days at work.

So on the weekends, we fucked... a lot.

It’s been exhausting, but satisfying, and I’ve never been happier.

Aside from spending time with Locheran getting to know each other, we’ve also been meeting with the task force trying to track down my family. There haven’t been many updates. It appears my father has gone into hiding.

Or he’s preparing for a big attack.

Now it’s Tuesday and Shakespeare week for my students. My excitement to discuss my favorite literary figure overpowers the uncertainty that hangs over my head.

I teach three, two-hour long classes that meet twice a week. Mondays and Wednesdays at eight a.m. and one p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays at eight a.m. I use the rest of Tuesdays and Thursdays for office hours and grading assignments.

I have an hour left at the office before heading home to Locheran’s apartment. My new home. My old apartment lease was taken over by a supe friend of Millie’s, the former vampire queen, who I haven’t officially met yet. I’ve heard of her because of my family. They made sure I knew all the names of many powerful supernatural beings in the United States.

I don’t regret moving in with Locheran. My apartment was great, but his is luxurious. The view of the Empire State Building alone is worth it. The place needs some decorations and color, but I’ve yet to unpack some of my things to hang up on the walls and place on shelves around the two-bedroom space.

“Why is it so… boring in here?” I asked one morning while eating breakfast.

He scoffed. “Rude.”

“Seriously, why haven’t you decorated?"

He shrugged. “I’m not here a lot, and I have no sense of decor.”

Such a male answer.

When I asked how much the rent cost, Locheran said he owns the apartment. Apparently, Xander owns a lot of the units in the building, too, either for his soldiers to live in and be near him, or for guests who need a place to sleep when visiting. Locheran bought his apartment at the same time Xander made all his investments, which was shortly after the building was built.

My phone vibrates on my desk, pulling me from my thoughts.

Loch

You thinking about me?

Me

No, why?

Loch

Don’t lie. I can feel you thinking about me
