“What are the chances someone can identify a rogue Knight? We’re not very popular over there,” Crossman said.
Wolf stood up. “Let’s go see. Colors on. We ride in formation as a show of force. People will try to avoid us, but the shopkeepers will talk to get us to leave. Someone has to know something. Melter, you find your connection and see if he has any more information.”
Melter shook his head. “He’s not gonna like me throwing him under the bus.”
“I don’t give a shit. We need to find this motherfucker now.”
Quillon nodded in agreement and tapped his fingers in a rolling rhythm on the tabletop. “So, do we tell Denny about this?”
Wolf’s face grew hard. Currently, a lot of friction existed between the leader of the Knights and the police officer. “Not yet. The law is the law, and justice is justice. Sometimes they don’t agree.” His phone buzzed. The man snorted when he saw the caller. “Speak of the devil.” He flicked the screen with his thumb and put the device to his ear. “Yeah?”
Darkness clouded his face, putting everyone on high alert. “Where are they now?” He listened for a moment, then hung up without saying goodbye. His eyes went straight to Cam. “You need to stay cool.”
Worse words had never been spoken.
As Wolf informed the group about the latest shooting, everyone’s attention shifted to Cam. Gunshots reported at Sunstone Healing. Two victims on the way to the hospital. A witness stated they’d seen a Knight loading an unconscious woman into a car and driving away. Blonde.
A fury like nothing he’d ever experienced erupted in Cam’s gut. Stay cool? Yeah, right. He’d stay as cool as an ice cube in the Sahara. “I’m going to kill him.”
Wolf nodded once. “We gotta find him first. Let’s ride.”
CHAPTER
TWENTY-SIX
Sabrina wasn’tsure what woke her up, the sounds or the smell. One voice cursed like crazy and another moaned in pain. Both were angry. She could make out some words, but not enough to form coherent sentences. The stench was awful, like sour piss and ass covered in Pine-Sol. The combination was gag worthy, and she hoped she wouldn’t vomit.
Gag was right, as there was something across her mouth and she couldn’t spit it out. She tried to lift her hand to her face, but it wouldn’t move.Fuck, I’m tied down! She became more aware of that fact as she pulled her limbs to test the strength and range of her bonds. Her arms and legs were helpless, spread-eagle across the firmest mattress she’d ever lain on.
Be still and think! She forced her breathing and heart rate to slow, deliberately taking in deeper air despite the stink, holding and letting it out in equal measure. The two people’s voices became clearer. Men. Angry and cursing. One sounded familiar, and the other sounded hurt.
“If you’d stop eating them like candy, maybe they’d last longer.”
“You try getting shot and dealing with this kind of pain.”
“You were supposed to stay hidden.”
“How could I do that in an open park? That was your idea, ya stupid jagoff!”
For a moment, nothing made sense, but then her heart jumped into her throat.
Park? Getting shot? These two were involved with the rally shooting! And if that was the case, they might also be the ones who had been terrorizing the neighborhood with the vandalism.
Clarity made her heart jump again.
Omigod! Rodrigo! Cicely!
She didn’t have time to wonder if someone had gotten them to the hospital. A splash of cold water landed on her face, and she choked on it as it went up her nose. For a moment, she couldn’t breathe. Then the gag was ripped away from her mouth and she gasped for air.
“I thought you were awake. Welcome back, bitch.”
Her sinuses burned from the dousing, and she continued to cough and retch. The man who stood above her looked like Specs, but not the one who’d been in charge at the rally, running around with a clipboard full of spreadsheets in one hand and multiple pens in the other. This man was cold. Calculating. And angry. Very, very angry.
“Specs,” she murmured, and a cruel smile appeared on the man’s face.
“So you do recognize me.” He gave a sardonic grunt.
“Who are you really?”
