Axel wasn’t like George. He was a good guy.Sweet and kind.
“This is going to be a fun meal, isn’t it?”Ashely asked.
“You knew!”
“Of course I knew.As soon as someone told Mom and Dad, I knew. You should have known your little tryst wasn’t going to stay a secret forever. This is one of the many reasons I left town.”
That, and she was a kick-ass lawyer who was headhunted.
“So, you and Axel, huh?”Ashley asked.
“Don’t.”
“What?I was wondering if he was even going to show.”Ashley let out a little squeal and then nudged her shoulder.“Come on, Axel, the guy that had nothing to do with anyone, has turned up for a family dinner, and you’re not a little excited about that?”
Joey smiled. It was kind of nice that he actually showed up.
Chapter Eight
Marshall loved hislittle girl and Axel completely understood that, and he was keeping an eye on her.
They sat in the main sitting room, and Marshall, for the longest time, just stared at him.Axel figured this was par for the course. He waited for him to take the lead. This is what his Uncle Rick had told him.
His grandparents had passed away when he was little, so it wasn’t like he could ask them about what his dad did when he met his in-laws.
“So, I’ve been told you’re quite the hard worker,” Marshall said.
“I try.I’m working on this current project just on the outskirts of town.”
“Yeah, the ranch that has been empty for nearly twenty years.”
Axel nodded.
“Look, let’s cut the shit,” Marshall said.“I don’t like your reputation, and I don’t want you messing with my girl.”
“I’m not messing with her,” Axel said.
