“Oh.” I shake myself off and thumb through, but Paige finds the chart in her own binder faster.
“Great. Thanks,” Dr. L says. “Jesus?”
I retreat while she works with Cam and Liam to try and mirror their kiss in this bit, where Judas is supposed to watch Jesus trudging across the stage with his cross, and they share one last look. Paige stays close to make more notes.
And then they run the scene again, and again, and it’sa little tediousway better than having to watch Liam and Cam kiss over and over.
“All right,” Dr. L says after their third time through. “Good. Tomorrow we’ll do it with the whole chorus.”
She starts packing up, while Paige and I hop back onto the stage to close up for the night. While Paige grabs the dust mop to sweep the stage, I run to the scene shop to grab the ghost light, but Cam and Liam are blocking the door. Cam’s gesturing emphatically with his hands, and Liam looks like he wants to escape.
Liam spots me first; when he realizes he’s lost Liam’s attention, Cam turns around too.
“What do you want, Jackthon?”
Liam’s eyes flash. “What did you just say?”
“I need in. Can you take it offstage?”
Cam rolls his eyes but steps around me, knocking my binder out from where I’ve got it tucked beneath my armpit.
It smacks the stage floor hard; papers rip and spill out between the scene shop and the dimmer rack. Cam keeps going as I drop to start picking everything up. Thankfully I have those little hole-reinforcing stickers.
Liam kneels to help me. After a moment, he flaps a hand for my attention.
“Yeah?”
“Why do you let him call you that?”
“What?”
He presses his lips together.
“It’s fine. It doesn’t bother me.”
Liam doesn’t seem convinced.
“I used to have a lisp. It’s whatever.”
“He’s being a dick. I should...”
But Liam pauses as he holds out a paper to me. At the top is written, in bold Sharpie,Dominic’s Breakup List.
“What’s this?”
Heat races along my skin.
“Nothing.”
“Who’s Dominic?” He scans the list; his eyebrows shoot up. “Dominic Ryan? Graduated last year?”
I nod. “Jasmine’s ex.”
Her first ex. In high school, at least. The first list I made for her.
“What...”
“Don’t tell her I told you. But Jasmine took their breakup really bad. I had to keep reminding her of his flaws to help her get over him.”
