I blinked in surprise. “What? I would never—”
“Never. I don’t care who you are. You’re never taking them from me. I will never lose them again. Never, you hear me?”
More smoke poured out of him, and I was glad I was immune being a dragon myself.
“You can’t have them.”
“Gar, I’m not trying to take them away from you. I would never—”
He growled again, and I knew his dragon was riding him so hard he couldn’t even hear me. Shit, I needed Tan. Why hadn’t I thought to have Tan with us to keep this damn scary ass dragon king calm?
“Gar? Garrick, can you hear me?”
“No one will ever take them again.”
And then Garrick did something I wasn’t expecting at all. He pulled something out of his pocket—it looked like glitter—and blew it in my face.
I spluttered. “What the… hell… is… that…” My words came out slower and slower as my body drooped and my eyes closed.
Garrick… Garrick knocked me out with magical glitter?
What… what was… happening…?
“Sorry, Rome, but I need some time to think. Good thing Tan keeps me supplied with a bunch of defensive spells.”
His words made little sense to my sleepy brain, and then everything went black.
Chapter Twenty-Five
Oakley
When I saw Tan calling, I answered the phone right away, saying, “Heya, Step-Daddy.”
He snorted. “Don’t call me that.” He let out a long sigh. “Are you home?”
“No. I’m with Ker, Anton, and the girls. Don’t worry, Anton’s my bodyguard for a few hours. We’re shopping, then going out to eat. Roman might meet us later, but we have to see when he finishes up his meeting with Dad. Why? What’s up? You wanna join us?”
He sighed again. “I… think you need to head down to the tower dungeons.”
Um… what?
“Uh… why would I go down there?” What a weird thing to tell me to do.
“Because… something happened. Gar—your dad, I mean—is being an asshole, okay? Like a big, huge, ginormous asshole. Just… get to the dungeons, and know you have my permission to get him out, okay?”
“Get who out?” What the actual fuck was he talking about?
“Listen, kiddo, I gotta go. Your dad’s coming. Go down there. Now.” He hung up before I could ask him anything else.
What a weird fucking conversation.
But… if Tan was telling me to go to the tower dungeons, it had to be for a good reason.
Who the hell did my dad have down in the dungeons?
Maybe I should call Rome and see if he had any more information.
For fuck’s sake, way to ruin my day out with Ker and the kids.
