“You’re doing so well. You can tell me.”Wes, calm and caring.Eleanor leaned toward him and scooted closer.

“The doc said he hadn’t assigned staff, but I guess I’m pretty sick; he didn’t want me to wait. He asked Mr. Crockett to… He put all the tubes in other than the one in my neck. He was kind. He talked me through everything. But when he spoke to the Marx and Conway family, you could hear how much it hurt him. He took everything personally. He apologized because he couldn’t keep them safe.” Tobey was growing agitated.

He said he wanted to help you too. “Tobey, deep breaths. He…”

His eyes closed.

“Tobey? Help! I need help in here,” she cried.

When medical personnel raced inside, Eleanor stepped back and watched them work. “Get me those numbers,” Sam Baker yelled as one of the nurses performed CPR.

“Shocking now,” a male PA said.

“We got him back. Did he talk to his wife?” Sam asked no one in particular.

“Yes,” Eleanor found her voice. She forced back her desire to cry.

“Alright, tube him. Succ and Etomidate.” Sam let out a harsh breath.

A woman ran in and read off a set of numbers. Sam Baker gritted his teeth. “Glucose, insulin, sodium bicarb and maintain the ringers drip. I need a PA in here all night. Run electrolytes every half hour; he’s gonna go the other way soon. Find one of the bosses to notify his wife of his condition.”

“I’ll call her,” Eleanor said.
