"It has felt like forever." Rudy cleared his throat and deepened his voice. "I mean, driving while distracted is dangerous. You should be more careful about where you let your thoughts wander while you drive. But out of curiosity...what exactly do you plan to do when you see your boyfriend again?" His lips quirked as he continued to fight a smile.

She tapped her chin, pretending to contemplate her answer while her heart screamed,"Kiss him until we're both breathless!"

"You know, he insulted me a while back while I was in the hospital. I tried to start a pillow fight with him, but I didn't have enough strength to follow through." She winked at him. "I'm feeling much stronger now."

"A pillow fight?" All semblance of a smile fled. Then a gleam filled his eyes. "What would the winner of this pillow fight get?"

Now she was the one holding back a smile. "Hmm... I think three months of not having to clean the bathroom."

His brow furrowed. "May I suggest a better reward?"

"What's that?"

"A kiss."

She gave a dramatic grimace. "I'm not sure that's a good idea. Bad things always happen when we kiss."

Amusement filled his face. "Maybe the loser could rub the winner's shoulders."

"Ooh, that sounds good. I could use a massage after the week I've had."

"Confident you'll win, huh?"

"Absolutely!" Although she was having fun, Rudy needed to kiss her soon, or she might attack him, right here on the side of the highway. "So, uh...officer, do you intend to harass me all day? Because like I said, I'm kind of anxious to see my boy—"

"I'm not harassing you." Surprise filled Rudy's voice.

"Then what do you call this?" She motioned to his car then hers.

He crouched down and put his arms on her door.

Finally!

"This is me asking you to go out with me tomorrow."

Eden's eyebrows arched. "You pulled me over to ask me out on a date?"

"Well, I was anticipating having to save your life again. But since that wasn't necessary, I figured I may as well ask you out since you're really pretty and all." When she picked up her purse to swat at him, he blocked it and laughed.

"Why do we need to wait until tomorrow to go out? Won't you be off work..." She checked her watch. "In a couple hours?"

"Because Kennedy has unequivocally let me know that you're hers tonight."

Eden had talked to Kennedy on the phone a few times this week, but she'd missed her friend too. She couldn't wait to tell Kennedy her plans.

"Did you really have to pull me over to ask me out? You couldn't have called me?"

"It's just more fun this way."

She took another swing at him with her purse, but he blocked it again.

"I didn't want you to make any other plans. I want you to spend the whole day with me tomorrow."

"The whole day? You're not planning on taking me fishing again, are you?"

"No fishing. Although, I plan to take you back to the lake after we go horseback riding and hiking, where we'll have a campfire and—"

"Horseback riding, hiking, and a campfire? Sounds like lots of opportunities for things to go wrong. We'd better make sure we don't kiss."
