“Don’t stop to talk to her, she’s insane,” she says as we reach the door.
“I amnotinsane,” Bridget says. She runs up to the door and throws herself in front of it, which kind ofdoesmake her look a bit crazy. “Just let me explain myself, and the offer that I want to present you both with before you leave.”
I know that Bridget isn’t crazy, but I do know that she has always been a bit off the beaten path. I can also see that Ava is about at her wit’s end with all of it.
“Please don’t tell me you’re even considering listening to her,” Ava says with a look of exasperation on her face.
“She’s not crazy,” I say in Bridget’s defense, which I think makes Ava a little upset with me. “She’s just weird. She’s always been a bit weird.”
“Hey,” Bridget says, and I realize that I am literally offending everyone now. “I’m standing right here you know.”
Both women are equally frustrated now, and I just want to avoid a big scene.
“Okay yes, what Bridget did with slipping a drug into my drink and bringing me here was over the top and unacceptable,” I say as I turn to Ava.
“Well at least we agree on that very obvious fact,” she says.
“But we’re here now, and we can leave anytime we’d like. I’d like to hear her out and see what she thought was important enough to go through all these measures to get us here.”
“You do realize that if this was Max doing this, you wouldn’t even be giving this a second thought and we would already be in the car driving away right now, right?” Ava says.
She’s absolutely right.
“Yes, but it’snotMax. I know that you don’t trust Bridget, and neither do I.”
“Still here, you guys,” Bridget says with a huff.
I ignore her and finish what I was saying to Ava.
“Bridget isn’t out to hurt anyone. She just has a strange way of going about things. I want to hear her out and then we can leave.”
“Fine,” Ava says. “But as soon as we listen to whatever crazy shit she has to say, then we are leaving. Deal?”
She is clearly unhappy about it.
“Deal.”
Bridget lets go of the door once she realizes that we aren’t going to run out of it and the three of us stand there awkwardly in the hallway together.
“Start talking,” Ava says impatiently as she glares at Bridget.
“I have ahugefarmhouse. There’s many more rooms and levels to the house than you have seen. And the farm that I have on all of the acreage outside is thriving and completely sustainable. It’s enough to bring in a sizeable income for me. But the one thing that I don’t have is anyone to help me with it. I don’t have any company, and I don’t have anyone to set it up so that I can continue to manage the farm alone.”
“Wait, so you wantfriends?” Ava asks with an almost sarcastic tone. “Are you looking for a man to stay with you?”
“No, no, nothing like that. I actually really like being on the farm alone. After Trevor and I broke up, I found that I am actually a much better version of myself when I’m alone. But the farm isn’t going to continue to be able to run itself, and I’m not going to be able to continue to run it alone without some modifications being made that can make it a bit more user-friendly.”
“That sounds like something that the company Ava and I set up would be able to do,” I say.
“I’m great with building and modifying things, and Ava is great at designing genius new ways to do things.”
“Yes! That is exactly what I thought,” Bridget smiles. “And that is what I wanted to propose to you.”
“You want us to redesign your farm?” Ava asks in disbelief. “And you went to these drastic measures to bring us all the way here? Why wouldn’t you just ask us at the party?”
“Would you honestly have even considered hearing out an offer from Trevor’s ex-girlfriend if you hadn’t been forced to come here?” Bridget asks her.
Ava doesn’t answer, but I can see by her face that the answer isno.
