This was what I thought yesterday when Wayne was rushed inside the hospital, bleeding. I knew I had seen him before. Taking a closer look at him, I realized that he was the man I met at the supermarket on Saturday.
Fear drew across my face as I hurriedly asked the nurses to take him to the X-ray room. I switched positions with Doctor Clark just to attend to him. Everyone wondered why I wanted to treat him since I had a handful of patients to take care of already. They couldn’t understand, and I did not bother to explain.
I know it has to be fate that brought us together like this again.
“How are you feeling today?” I ask him, a broad smile drawn across my face.
“I feel better, thanks to you,” he smiles back.
“Mm, so, do you live here?” I decide to engage him in a conversation as I dress his wound.
“Yeah, I do,” he responds, nodding.
“That’s beautiful and unique. Wow,” I flash Wayne a small glance.
“You think so? You think it’s beautiful and unique?” he implores, squinting his eyes.
“Haha, yes, it is. This is the life that many people wish for – the peace and serenity,” I explain.
“Oh, really? That’s new. Mm, I’ve never really heard a lot of people tell me living in the mountains is ‘beautiful’,” he says, quoting the beautiful with his fingers.
“In my personal opinion, it is.”
I finish dressing his wound. It looks better now, and I’m glad to see he’s healing well.
“How about you? Do you like it here?”
“Well,” I pack the medical kits back in the box. “I’m not sure yet. I just moved, I’ve not seen a lot of this place. But I’m sure I’ll like it.” I smile at him.
“I’m sure you will like it,” he agrees.
“Hm, you should rest, I have to go.” I pat his shoulder gently before walking out.
“Doctor Newman,” one of the nurses calls me as I step out of the emergency room.
I turn around to face her, “Yeah?”
“Do you like that man?” she questions in a quiet tone.
A small frown builds on my face. In the little time I have spent here, I’ve noticed that Nurse Alice loves prying into other people’s businesses.
“Are we supposed to hate our patients, or what do you mean?” I frown at her.
“Oh, that’s not what I mean. I mean, do you like him? Like personally, as a man,” a creepy smile forms on her face.
“Why are you even asking me this?” I smirk before walking away.
She follows me. “You know Wayne is a really good man. I’ve known him for quite a while. I’m sure you see it too, he’s handsome. And I tell you, he has a decent personality. I’m not—”
“Nurse Alice,” I turn around sharply.
“Yes, what I’m saying is—”
“Get back to work!” I shun her before walking away from the spot.
A loud exhale drops from my lips as I observe the patients in the Intensive Care Unit from where I stood. There are a lot of them, this hospital has more patients than I imagined.
“Thanks for your help. They are healing fine.”
