I smile back at her. I like this woman.
“You couldn’t be more right,” I say. “And yes, I think we would like to take you up on that arrangement.”
I look over at Granite and he nods in agreement.
“Perfect,” she says as she stands up from the table. “Follow me and I’ll show you the room. That way you can start making yourselves comfortable right after dinner.”
She pauses in the kitchen for a moment and reaches up for a teapot that is on top of her refrigerator.
“Can I help you to reach that?” Granite asks as he hands the teapot down to her with ease.
“Thank you,” she smiles and then looks over at me. “You’ve got a tall and handsome man here.”
I laugh a little and Granite’s face blushes, which is sweet. Then the woman removes the lid of the teapot and reaches her hand inside. When she pulls it back out, she has a wad of cash between her fingers, which she hands to me.
“Here,” she says. “This is an advance to get you started. I can’t expect you to start working around the house until you have what you need in order to feel comfortable.”
“Thank you,” I say.
I know that she probably thought we needed that money for food and supplies, and maybe a change of clothes or two. But the first thing we went to the store to get, was a pair of scissors and a couple boxes of hair dye.
